Hi AVS:Y1 Backers,
I have quick followup to my last update. I heard some concerns from some potential backers that the game is about seducing three pirate woman and is thus sexist and just like Leisure Suit Larry. I just wanted to clarify and say nothing can be further from the truth and to apologize for it not being clearer. Duke’s crew is indeed a bunch of sexist boors and they are the ones who send Duke out on this essentially sexist quest, to prove he is a ‘lady’s man.’ They tell him in order to be captain of the ship Duke must be a true swashbuckler, not just a lowly pirate. And one of the traits of true swashbuckler is to be a 'lady's man'. Duke thinks about and does recall the last captain having a lot of female friends around him when they are in port. So his slow brain buys this story, for now.
It’s really just a wild goose chase. The crew just want him off the ship so they can leave as soon as possible because Duke is so strong and so angry all the time that they are literally afraid of him all the time. only their last captain could control Duke, but now that he is gone, they are all in trouble.
Duke is dim witted and a bit slow, so he leaves the ship for the island, but still, he is not sure about this whole idea. He ultimately decides he is no 'lady’s man', but still wants desperately to be accepted as the new captain of his ship, so he tries to fulfill the dumb quest anyway. Ultimately he never does seduce anyone, but he does help three woman out by just being a generally good guy. I don’t want to spoil the plot too much but I did want to make it clear, his crew are the villains in this game, tricking Duke off the ship and sending him on sexist quest, a quest they know this dumb oaf is doomed to fail. But they underestimate his good heartedness, perseverance and determination and live to regret tricking him.
Hopefully that clears everything up. So if you had any reservations about backing Duke Grabowski: Mighty Swashbuckler because you thought it would be a sexist game about picking up women, have no fear, it isn't. The game is really about the dangers of giving in to peer pressure, trying to boost one’s self esteem by following the crowd, and it’s a story about watching a character mature. Plus if you knew Alyssa Clark, the writer from Teen Wolf, you would know she would never work on sexist game. She'd kick my butt if it were.
P.S. I'm joking. Alyssa would never kick my butt.
P.P.S. Yes she would.
