About this project
Introducing the SensClipper, an improved way to clip nails at, with more confidence and control.
The SensClipper is a smart reinvention of the regular nail clipper that we all know. It has an extendable grip that allows you to clip at the desired length, whilst providing more safety and more grip at the same time.
It offers several advantages when clipping your own nails or those of others:
- Clip nails at the exact desired length
- More safety
- More grip
- Reduces shattering
- Less filing
The skin guard prevents clipping nails too short or even into the skin. Nails that are cut too short can be painful and cause all sorts of problems, like ingrown nails.
The extended ergonomic design offers more grip, preventing the clipper to slip out of your hands, giving you a steady hold and a sense of control.
The safety and grip aspect are especially convenient when having to clip others. Some people who have reduced maneuvering skills, are less capable of clipping their own nails. When you clip your own nails, you will probably feel it when you are about to clip too low, so these features will give you more confidence whilst clipping others. It also benefits children that just learned to clip their own nails as subtle maneuvering skills keep developing until around the age of 10.
Adjustable length and less shattering
The extended grip can slide forward, setting the skin guard to your desired position, which enables you to cut your nails to an equal length.
In addition, the shape of the skin guard forces you to clip your nails in an even line, which reduces shattering and saves you a lot of time filing.
The story so far
I am a freelance personal assistant and recruiter for renowned Dutch entrepreneurs. For my work I have to look well presented and that includes my hands. I wear my nails long, in which case I believe they have to be at an equal length. I have a busy life, I don't want to spent ages filing my nails. That is why I clip them first, or at least, tried to clip them, to an equal length and finish with a short filing action.
Those with long nails probably faced the same problem when trying to achieve this with the outdated clipper: You cut one nail too short and you have to start all over again, ending up with nails much shorter than you would like…. Which can be quite annoying when you are in a hurry...
I asked myself: why wasn't there a way to clip your nails to an identical length of your choice? This is when the idea for the SensClipper came to me.
With some carton and tape I made my first prototype and showed it to family and friends. Then I started working with professional designers and engineers to make a working prototype.
With this prototype, I went out for market research. To my surprise, the people I spoke to saw other advantages of the SensClipper than I initially did myself. They liked the idea because of the extra grip and safety it provides. Even the people that bite their finger nails, could see a use for their toe nails....At that point, I realized the SensClipper would actually benefit a lot more people then I originally thought.
I decided to gather a team of creative product developers. With their technical skills combined with my user perspective and business experience, we went ahead to optimize the design to where it is today.
Where do we stand now?
We now have working 3D printed models of 3 sizes SensClippers. The next phase is to fine tune some design details and finalize the finishing touches.
Any feedback you have from your user perspective will be very helpful in this process.
The final prototypes have to be made in the desired material, which will be used for endurance testing. We are discussing some manufacturing details right now as well as deciding which material we will be using.
Plastic is not just plastic, there are 100's of different types and each can be filled with 10's of different substrates in many concentrations. Right now we are looking at PA (aka Nylon) with a glass fill of somewhere between 20 and 40 % for hardness so the sliding system keeps working after 10,000 movements. The clipper we will be using, needs to be adjusted as well in order to work to it's optimal with the attachment. Once these phases are finished, the molds need to be developed so we can start production.
Where will the funding be used for?
The set goal is very modest and your pledges will be used to push the project to completion.
With the launch on Kickstarter, 3 sizes will be available as a reward to choose from. We will produce these first batches in the colors preferred by the backers and once the campaign is successful, we will hold a survey to determine these colors.
This model is especially designed to clip children. During the development phase we spoke with a lot of parents. And they all say the same: it is difficult or even nerve wrecking to clip children. The smaller they are, the scarier it is. They move around and the nails are very soft.
SensClipper Mini has been modified with an extra handle to give you even more grip. The skin guard is adjusted to suit all sizes of little fingers.
The medium size is around 5,5 cm long. This model will be manufactured in one color initially.
SensClipper Large is around 9 cm long.
In general, the medium size is aimed to clip finger nails and the large size to clip toe nails, however, this is entirely up to you, the user. Whatever you find more comfortable.
The retail value of the SensClippers is around € 8,50.
When the project is successful, we will do a survey to determine the exclusive color you like your rewards to be produced in. Each size will come in one and the same color, so make your vote count. We would also like to hear from you whether you would prefer the little files to come along with the clippers or not.
In a later stage we aim to develop a pro version, for professionals such as manicurists, pedicurists and care takers.
We specifically chose to launch the SensClipper on Kickstarter, not only because Kickstarter is an exceptional platform to introduce new ideas and not just to raise funds. But also to get the product directly into the hands of you, the users. We need your input to bring the best product we can to the market. We want to hear what you think and learn from you. We are extremely excited to see how you will react and can't wait for your feedback!

Risks and challenges
We've chosen a large, reputable factory in China, which has been manufacturing metal and plastic tools for a long time.
Jochem, our product engineer has worked with them before and they are known to deliver excellent products. However, to make sure the product meets the required standards, quality control will be outsourced to a European company with a branch in China.
May any issue arise, we do have several back up plans, like a backup factory.
The SensClipper is not a complicated tool to manufacture. The clippers themselves are for the most part standard and the attachment can be fairly easy molded; we do not expect major technical issues.
The only risk we see at this point is delay in the delivery time frame. This may be caused due to a delay in finalizing some design details.
Once ready for shipping, other issues could cause delay, such as customs holding containers, a disaster during shipping. But we try to narrow down risks where we can, by choosing an experienced shipping/forwarding company.
However, just to be on the safe side, we already calculated some delay within our time frame.
Once the products have arrived, we will personally manage and pack your reward to you! Ok...if we blast our goal and have to sent out thousands of rewards, well, that would be quite a luxury problem. In which case we will outsource logistics to a professional partner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
