Big Ugly Brewing is the first microbrewery in Chesapeake, Va. We are excited to brew big, bold, brews for Hampton Roads’ beer lovers. Our flagship beer will be a Russian Imperial Stout. We also plan to brew American Pale, American West-Coast style India Pale, and blonde ales, a porter and a saison. In addition, we are planning one-off seasonal and barrel-aged variations for periodic release, so expect new beers often. We will be a family-friendly brewery with draught root beer for the kids.
Jim Lantry is our head brewer who began in 2000 and has produced award-winning pale ales and Russian Imperial Stouts. Along with company president Shawn Childers, the duo have brewed together for the better part of 10 years and sampled more than 4,000 beers from around the world. This combined experience has forged the path to determining the types of beer Big Ugly plans to offer.
Long-time bucket list buddies, Shawn and Jim have a shared appreciation for classic cars and motorcycles which drives the theme for the brewery. The garage-themed tasting room will have classic motorcycles and Jim’s circa-1974 Volkswagen bus on display. Big Ugly is named after Shawn’s 1955 Chevy panel truck seen in our logo.

We will be brewing on a seven-barrel, Pub System brew house. We have two 12-barrel fermenters and hope to purchase an additional seven-barrel fermenter. We procured six bourbon barrels for our first batch of aged beers and hope to finalize our contract for next year’s barrels with your support.

Risks and challenges
Starting a new brewery from scratch is a daunting task. Permits, equipment and construction all present various obstacles and challenges. Thus far, we have met those challenges and are currently in the building process.
We are now looking to take our brewery plans to the next level by developing our barrel aging program. This will allow us to create one-off, barrel aged versions of your favorite beers. We want to add to the excitement already in the Hampton Roads craft beer community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
