About this project
(en français ici)
In the early 90's, Rémi Gazel met a young game designer called Michel Ancel. Michel was about to create one of the most popular video game character: Rayman.
Rémi was a pianist and composer with a real passion for computers and video games. Michel was building a team for his new project and had only one piece missing: musics! These two were meant to meet.
Michel wanted the best possible soundtrack for his upcoming platformer. After a few (restless) nights talking about the project and the musical experience he wanted to offer the players, Michel asked Rémi to compose most of the musics of what will become one of the most popular soundtrack in video game history. For more than a year, Rémi worked with the dev team and composed 12 tracks (out of 19) for the game, including popular themes such as The Dream Forest, The Wizard, Mr Dark...
After this unique experience, Rémi went back to his usual musical life, composing songs and playing piano with different bands in France. Professionally speaking, he also started another artistic carrier focused on photo and video. But he never forgot about Rayman and neither did the fans.
For the past 10 years, Rémi kept on receiving messages asking him about his musics and if he was planning on playing them in public. He got invited to several game conventions in France and got a great success with each concert. Rémi got connected again with the Rayman fans. He was amazed to see how many of them remembered his songs and were asking him for more.
At first Rémi thought about a possible “Rayman 1 Music Live Tour”. He started to work with his band on full new orchestrations of his songs and made some trials and recordings with his Jazz/Rock band.
But the fans made it clear: they wanted first to get this new songs at home. This is how Rayman By Rémi - The Collector Soundtrack Album project was born !
For the past year, Rémi has been working with friends on this project to record a full new album based on Jazz/Rock rearrangements of his original songs. A few months ago, he got the greenlight from Ubisoft to do so (Ubisoft supports « Rayman by Rémi » project but is not associated with the project nor will get any income from the Kickstarter campaign.)
So here we are, asking for your help to make it come true!
Our base goal is to fund the recording of 12 songs from Remi’s compositions for Rayman 1. This include Remi’s works on new arrangements and the gathering of an 8 musicians band in studio.
We will record 12 tracks in a full new modern style including:
- Pink Plant Woods - Dream forest
- Blazing Brass - Mr Sax
- Eat at Joe’s - Lurking in the Darkness
- Entering the Cavern - Crystal Palace
- Moskito - Hold on tight
- Mr Skops - Never wake a sleeping scorpion
- Candy Chateau - Creepy Clowns
- The Magician Challenge - The Wizard
- Cloak of Darkness - Mr Dark
- Once More - Continue / Replay Theme
- Partie at Joe’s - Credits Theme
- End of the Line - Game Over Theme
Our wish is also to produce a very fancy vinyl collector album !
It will be produced with Black Screen Records, a music label dedicated to collector video game soundtracks. It will be made in one of the best European vinyl factory and will include two audiophile coloured 180g vinyl, gatefold sleeve with a special matt varnish, 4c label print for both discs, poly-lined inner sleeves for best protection of the vinyl records and a special vinyl mastering.
The discs will be purple and orange. This is exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, the retail version will offer only regular black discs.
It also include the soundtrack on a CD, included in a paper sleeve.
Of course this new album will be also available as a digital and CD album.
Our second goal would make this collector album project even greater. Remi’s wish is to invite Pixelophonia, a symphonic orchestra dedicated to video game musics, to join in.
About 45 musicians will join the band in studio and make incredible featuring in at least 7 of the new tracks.
If we get a great support from you we have an even more crazy project. If we reach this 3rd goal we will add 6 extra remix by some of the finest French electro musicians.
This will come as free additional tracks in the digital and CD versions. On the vinyl side, we will offer another “stand alone” collector disc with electro artists never gathered before on the same album. As a thank you for your support, it will be offered for a very small additional fee, very close to the cost price.
So who’s in this mysterious electro team ? Let keep some magic for now, we will unveil our cool musicians line-up as we get closer to this goal!
Self-taught musician passionate about digital technologies and the endless opportunities they offer, Rémi is an ever-evolving artist. His personal journey brought him to experiment many creation fields from music to digital art, video making, web design…
He now feeds from all this very different experiences to give birth to a very personal artistic work, always eager to learn and improve himself.

Risks and challenges
The main risk for Rayman by Rémi was related to the trademarks. Rayman belongs to Ubisoft, so do the musics Rémi composed back in 1995. It was mandatory that the publisher allows us to run this campaign. Not only they did but they were also very supportive and made things easy. We now have a full-fledged licensing contract that covers every possible aspect of this project.
As said in the project introduction, Ubisoft supports « Rayman by Rémi » project but is not associated with the project nor will get any income from the Kickstarter campaign.
In the process of achieving the album a few risks exist. For personal or professional reasons some of the musicians you can see in the videos might not be available when Rémi will go into studio. But Rémi has plenty of talented friends so it will not delay anything.
In terms of manufacturing the CD and Vinyls, everything is already agreed upon and set up with Black Screen Records. We know how and where your rewards will be produced.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
