When I was little, I vividly remember the Scholastic book order form and the excitement to put in an order. As the only girl in my class that played sports, I, like the most of the boys, gravitated to the books about the football and basketball and an occasional puppy poster. Never in the choices listed was there a book about a girl playing sports – no one who looked like me. But I did play sports and continued to throughout my life.
It was 30 years later and I STILL could not find books about girls playing sports in the order forms. I found cheerleading, horseback riding and many boys, but still no girls playing sports. That was when the character of Shelly Bean was born.
Shelly Bean the Sports Queen is a product of a new generation where being a “jock” is acceptable for girls and encouraged. This picture book for ages 4-9 not only applies to aspiring girls but to aspiring boys as well. Follow Shelly Bean and her friends as they play new sports together in each book. Parents can utilize the instructional and safety tips at the back of each book as well. Shelly Bean is a sporty, dirty knee little girl with a “can-do” spirit. It might take falling down, getting hurt and getting back up but Shelly Bean is determined to learn new sports and be great. Shelly Bean is often inspired after observing sports on TV or watching others play in the neighborhood. She gets it in her mind that it is her time to play and to reward herself each time she is successful, she makes a new charm to put on her sports queen crown like a jewel of accomplishment.
The first three books are nearly done! Imagine buying them this summer! Funds from this Kickstarter campaign will go to:
1. Fees for illustration completion
2. Fees for final editorial work of the first three books in the series.
3. Fees for production, printing, distribution and fulfillment
4. Marketing budget
5. Kickstarter and Amazon fees (8-10%)
The goal amount will not cover all expenses but will springboard the project into full production.
I am asking you to fund this project because it matters and is missing in the market place. You will be contributing to something meaningful. If you are a girl or woman who has played sports, please make a pledge to help Shelly Bean come to life. If you want to honor a strong female in your life or provide a positive role model for girls and boys - please make a pledge!
Risks and challenges
There are always risks and challenges in doing something the first time. This is why I have enlisted the support of others who have self-published, illustrated, edited and launched new products. After a full review of what is in the market-place and a comprehensive review of costs associated with production and distribution, the greatest risk is in the ability to secure the funds to complete the production of the first three books. The success will come from there!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
