The roads that connect the faces of Vanlife are long. They are filled with stories that stretch over decades, years spent uniting, creating and reconnecting with one another.
Vanlife is a rapidly growing lifestyle where people all over the world are converting vans into rolling homes to explore more, connect with nature and the people who live in small towns, and spend more time on their creative passions while lowering the cost of accommodations on longer road trips.
Over the past few years, the fast growth in popularity of blogs and social media accounts has helped develop the awareness of Vanlife in a massive way.
Since its humble beginnings, the Vanlife movement and its online community has grown to well over a million people and has been responsible for many successful gatherings, van fitouts, concerts, first nations initiatives, mental health awareness campaigns, environmental initiatives and so much more.
These modern nomads are leading the way in a whole new genre of inspired living and visual diaries and the future is very exciting.
We have a talented, passionate team of inspired, well-rounded individuals in Australia and the United States with a burning desire to bring our ideas into fruition.
An award winning filmmaker and documentarian, Jim Lounsbury is a natural collaborator and has worked with fellow artists, online communities, and filmmakers to explore new ways to engage with people through storytelling.
Notable productions are Jim’s documentary The Aussie Who Baffled the World [National Geographic] about renowned Australian inventor and naturalist Jim Frazier and his debut feature film Love is Now [Universal Pictures] a mystery romance about love and loss that embodies the philosophy Jim lives by...that the best creations are greater than the sum of their parts. The Meaning of Vanlife represents a bold, new approach for Jim as a documentarian.
In the spirit of a new era in collaboration and interconnectedness, Jim is working with Jonny Dustow and Jared Melrose to create a documentary in collaboration with a stable of filmmakers, musicians, artists and photographers from within the Vanlife Diaries community. This is an approach we are calling ‘Open Source Filmmaking,' and will lend authenticity and diversity to the production, by featuring candid and insightful footage from around the world.
The Meaning of Vanlife is an artful and revealing documentary that explores the spirit, struggles and philosophies of a movement, which is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon.
Over a tepid coffee in 2015, Jonny and Jared decided to start a community to share the stories of people who they were meeting on the road while living in their vans. Only 18 months later, their stories had attracted more than 300,000 worldwide followers, tapped into a growing community of people living on the road and off the grid.
The Meaning of Vanlife follows Vanlife founders Jonny and Jared as they set out to connect with with Vanlifers around the world to discover the freedom, challenges and raw moments behind this minimalist lifestyle.
They will also speak to authors, economists and sociologists about the cultural shifts that have made movements like Vanlife so appealing, and open up about how their own struggles led to discovering the embrace of a global community of like-minded people.
From the simplicity of sharing music and stories on the road, to breakthroughs in environmental science, to a sociological discussion about the importance of Vanlife—this documentary gets its wings from looking at perspectives within the community itself, in an adventurous, revealing look into the rising notion of Vanlife.
We’re inviting our sponsors and fellow Vanlifers to join us on our journey and attend our gatherings. Keep in touch via social media to find out exact dates and locations.
