In English - About the project
Did you see parents or guardians hopelessly staring at their children, clueless how to interest them with paintings in the museums? How to make them focus on art pieces? How to develop their sense of aesthetics? Or otherwise: did you experience the feeling of boredom when you were a child and you were dragged around famous museums with a guide, who was talking about well-known paintings in a monotone, extremely detailed way? Or maybe you were tired with listening to the art teacher at primary school when she was thoroughly describing how important was the sacral aspect in medieval art?...
We believe that too many children in Poland didn't have and still sometimes lack access to interesting, creativity developing materials about art. Textbooks are too often focused on biographical details of painters or technical aspects. We don't want to create a textbook, but a book full of funny coloring and cut-out exercises in order to teach playing with art and creativity. Our goal is to show kids in a playful way both master pieces and less known paintings. We want to help raise children to be art-loving, imaginative parents!
The idea of the project came up in Paris, where Polish authors - Maria and Matylda - live. We both enjoy visiting art exhibitions there and we noticed that museum shops sell a number of incredibly beautiful books about art for children. These are not textbooks, but books focused on boosting creativity in children through different interesting exercises. We thought that it would be terrific to create a similar product for the Polish market. In addition, we noticed that French books were often quite expensive. In contrary to this, we aim to publish inexpensive books, so a kid could play with them, paint on them, do cut-outs - all without worrying that it might get destroyed.
We want to publish a series of books entitled "In Frame" ("W Ramie" in Polish). As mentioned above, our first goal is to publish them in Poland - however, if we receive enough interest from e.g. France or UK, we would be happy to translate and publish them in different language.
Each book will feature e a graphic guide for the children - a likeable, colorful "Mr. Frame" ("Pan Rama" in Polish) who would introduce exercises to children. Each book in the series would be focused on one particular subject, for example "Water", "Trees", "Mountains" and so on. The first book, which we have already finished, is entitled "Water" ("Nad Wodą" in Polish). We show in it 15 paintings and sculptures that in different way portray water - along with 15 exercises added to each art piece. Among featured masterpieces there are those created by artists such as Van Gogh, Brueghel, Monet or Vernet. "Mr. Frame" would accompany children in their journey through the art world. Through talking about one certain subject - in this case, water - we want to show children that some subjects which seem to be necessarily portrayed in one way might be, in fact, showed in various ways. Water is not only a blue wave - it might be red (Gaugain) or pictured by pink dots (Signac).
We prepared a variety of exercises. Among them there are colouring exercises, cut-outs, stickers and origami. They have a major function, because they are supposed to focus child's attention on certain details of chosen art pieces. We want to develop creativity in children, and also introduce them in a playful way to important art concepts such as perspective. Exercises are adjusted to age of children which are at least 6-years old, and they are mostly addressed to children attending first few classes of primary school.
First book ("Water") has been already finished. We just need funding to bring it to bookstores! :)
A note about authors - iTON Society
iTON Society is a Polish venture dedicated to artistic and intellectual projects. Within the organization we work on diverse projects: among them, we publish hardly available books. One of our current project is publishing a series of books about art for children. Project is being created by two persons:
- Maria (LinkedIn) - she manages the project (she has experience gathered e.g. at McKinsey & Company) and is actively working on writing the content. Maria is an equity partner at iTon Society.
- Matylda - art historian, Sorbonne graduate: she chooses paintings for the books thanks to her knowledge and experience. She also writes the content of the book.
Maria and Matylda are the authors of the concept of the book. On bringing this project to life, we collaborate with Debora - graphic designer and photographer, who has already worked on designing children products. We need financial backing to afford her help!
Debora Ramos (Gallery) is our graphic designer from Argentina, based in Paris. She has before designed graphics for children in her homeland.
We also want to thank Dominik Harpula, who greatly helped us in filming a promo movie for the crowdfunding campaign.
Moreover, we would like to thank the Paris-based cafeteria for children CaféZoïde for allowing us to make our movie inside their place. We encourage to visit their cafeteria!
Risks and challenges
The concept of books is finished. Project of the first one in the serie - called "Water" ("Woda" in Polish) is also finished. The paintings featured in the book are chosen, short stories that accompany paintings are written, all law-related questions are answered, and consultations with children psychologist were carried on.
Right now the only thing we need are funds to pay our graphic designer - Debora - for bringing our project to life. We also carry on a separate crowd-funding campaign on Polish market in order to print the book.
The design of "Mr Frame" ("Pan Rama" in Polish) or design of exercises might differ a bit in the final version - we will probably carry on some discussions while finishing the projects. However, these are not going to be the fundamental changes.
We will do everything to deliver the product as fast as possible once we have funds!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
