On December 2, 2012, at 10pm, I will board a flight to Bogota, Colombia. I know no one in South America, and will be traveling alone.
I have no return ticket.
My plan is basically this: To explore the Northwest countries of South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia) on a bare-bones budget, and to do my best capture this experience in ink and paint. When I return to the United States, I will use the high-quality digital scans of my work to produce my own hand-bound art books depicting the paintings, drawings, and sketches from my journey.
My drawings and paintings will cover a wide variety of subjects and places. While I have no specific itinerary, I anticipate that I will come home with artwork depicting the following places (as well as the people I meet there):
- The famed city of Cartagena, Colombia.
- Lowlands of the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia.
- The Inca citadels in Peru's Sacred Valley
- Beaches in Ecuador
- Cloud Forests
- The ruins of the lost city, Cuidad Perdida, in Colombia.
- Eerie Bolivian salt deserts
- The Amazon River (from several different countries)
- Machu Picchu in Peru
When does the project begin/end?
It begins when I land in Bogota on December 3rd, and ends sometime around May 2013 when I make my way back to California by plane or cargo ship.
If successfully funded, this project will provide me not only with the money necessary to complete my book, but with accountability. I know it's unlikely that I will go through this trip without being miserable at some point. Having artwork I've promised to produce will stop me from giving up and going home, even when that's all I want to do. Should I find myself in a strange place, lonely and homesick, this project will force me to find it within myself to keep going.
What do the Kickstarter funds go towards?
Art supplies, plus the cost of materials for printing and binding the books on my return to the states. Also, since I will be traveling on a very minimal budget, some places (Machu Picchu for example) will be too expensive for me to get to without the help of kickstarter funds.
What will the hand-bound books be like?
I'm picturing a roughly 8.5" x 5.5" book with a faux leather cover. I adore vintage books and intend to produce a limited series of hand-bound books with a antique sort look, while still having vibrant images of my artwork within. Of the hundreds of drawings and paintings I'll complete while abroad, only the very best will be chosen for the book.
Each book will treated as a small art project. I intend to have no two be exactly the same. All books are numbered and signed by the artist.
How big are the original paintings/drawings?
Small- roughly 3"x 4" to 4"x6"
Med- roughly 7" x 5" to 8" x 8"
Large- roughly 8" x 10" to 10"x 12"
Since my paintings need to be safely stored in my pack, work larger than this probably won't be possible.
What mediums do you use?
Watercolor, Gouache, Colored Pencil, India Ink, and Charcoal.
I use only archival quality paper and materials.
Below are examples of paintings done during my travels in Laos.
Risks and challenges
For six months, everything I own will be in a backpack. This means there will always be a danger of original artwork being stolen, dumped off my boat into the Amazon, burned up in a campfire accident, etc. To insure against any major loss, I will be traveling with a small portable scanner so that I can keep a digital record of everything I draw and paint, and back it up online. I will also be periodically be shipping home original artwork for safe keeping.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
