Why I am making the NOWHERE documentary movie?
I have been raised by a tolerant family believing in profound human values, such as the belief that every human life on this world has the same values, that there should be no borders and distinctions between people and races and that we should help those who really are in need. We never know when it is our own turn to be in need. In history everything has repeated so far… I am myself marked by one happening, which changed my childhood and life: the moment, when I was four years old and my parents, who already had four children of their own decided to take care of two Vietnamese boat people brothers who had survived a dramatic three week boat odysee across the sea. We did not have a lot of space, but shared the little we had with our new brothers, who soon became an integrated part of our life.
My brother Ngoc, who was nine years old when he fled from Vietnam, ended up studying medicine and became a reknowned Austrian doctor in Traditional Chinese Medicine, helping now hundreds of infertile couples fullfilling their life dream: having a baby. (From the movie: “He, whose life was once saved by a fisherman, helps now to give life. That is something very special.”) . My other brother became a successful guitar teacher, whose students win most of the Austrian music awards. I still remember when my parents saved money to buy him his first guitar, so he could start studying at the conservatory.
I never thought making this movie, until I started to feel that the society which surrounds me was drifting more and more towards the xenophobic corner, which threatens and saddens me very much. While the populistic media and politicians spread negative news about everyone who is considered “a stranger”, especially about refugees, I felt the growing need to tell a positive story, a story that really happened: the story of my Vietnamese brothers and particularly of my brother Ngoc. I feel an urgent need to tell with this story that if you give somebody a real chance, he might give back to society much more than he ever received, such as it happened with my brothers.
Who am I by the way?
I am an award winning Austrian filmmaker, focusing the topics of my films mainly on humanitarian themes, which bother me or stories, from which I feel deeply touched. It is the first time, that the story I am telling is so closely connected with my own life and I believe that this is a huge potential, to make this movie be a great movie and spread its humanitarian values out to the world.
What is the crowdfunding campaign for?
The target funds of EUR 25,000 will be used to make the postproduction of the documentary film NOWHERE, particularly sound design, color grading, image postproduction and effects, and mastering. If more money than the target is raised, it will be used to market and pitch the movie in festivals and film markets.
I am aiming to premiere this film at one of the big festivals, such as Sundance, Berlinale or IDFA and to distribute it as much as possible in festivals, cinemas and through TV sales.
Please help me finish this journey. I have come so far, but need your help now for the last leg. We are going to make a difference with this movie. I hope you will decide to join me.
Risks and challenges
This project has no risks. I am already at rough cut stage, so I need the money only for postproduction and marketing. The successful termination of this movie is guaranteed with a successful kickstarter campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
