I'm confused. When are backers supposed to get their units? I haven't gotten mine yet.
+1 @Steve Fish
@John Gould: Awesome point. I hadn't thought of that. I'd rather have a top notch device anyway, but that's the icing on the cake.
Great job, PlayJam. I'm looking forward to it.
@Kickstarter: We need some way to block annoying people. Make this place more social. Let me block or hide people. =)
@Steve Fish if people don't complain then other projects will abuse the system with targets only for retail while masquerading as crowdfunded projects. Read the front page of this project and then the pledge breakdowns on the right.
Let it sink in a bit, try to understand the opposing view, project goes from small crowdfunded project to international retail product, with all original decisions being remade to enter retail space. Another damning thing is the decision to use inferior molds in the beginning and then "switch" to higher quality molds right after the small dev unit runs.
I would, like many others, have been happy with the prototype versions with proper updates as they tweaked everything for retail. Notice that the hardware has not been upgraded, only the firmware capabilities, and some driver tweaking as of late, which is mainly due to dev unit hardware.
Just a very poorly handled project from a backers perspective, which has been co-opted by retail interests.
Send me a perfectly functioning retail unit later, send me a updated dev unit now.
@ Gamestick have you thought of retail specific colours for controllers? Like a purple/black controller for GAME?
@GameStick you can't keep ignoring the original backers, you may internalize and say it's only a few more months, but like many others, I pledged for an idea to deliver me a work in progress device, not a fully finished retail product. I really don't care if the case has gaps, if I have to blow on the stick before I put it in the dock, if the mhl doesn't work on all the tvs I plan to use it on.
@Jonathan DeMarks the wrong decision was made for moulds in February, so now all the backers get shafted, were they planning on keeping the majority of the pledges instead if retailers didn't bring orders? The decision making process appeared completely irrational from the outside but everything became crystal clear when the focus shifted to appeasing the retail targets.
@Jonathan Goldsmith I'd be happy with a prototype that worked, just like the dev sticks, send me the firmware updates whenever. If the retail units were that fantastic there would be multiple sales from me and many other backers, not to mention gifting to gamers.
I might as well get a reversal from my credit card company through Amazon, what's the point of waiting until the summer? Should I just grab a Mk808b android hdmi stick and a bunch of Bluetooth devices and not deal with this anxiety of wondering what the controlling interests of PlayJam will do when they're the target of a hostile takeover.
Have they even wondered about Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft, and their already love hate relationship with the retail space. Would they even want GameStick anywhere near their very expensive shelf and locked display walls?
My life will end if I don't get my GameStick before May 1. I don't care if it's a twitching pile of smoking, fetid detritus. Send it now!!!! And it better play Skyrim and read my mind or you lied to us and I hate your ass-face!
You know that's what many posts to this page sound like, right? Just stop.
I used to enjoy reading these posts, but it's just devolved into a place where easily butthurt hyperconsumers vent their spleens. Ugh. I'm just going to watch my email for the ship date to be sent. Until then, I'll sit back, enjoy a refreshing beverage, and assume the GS team are continuing to kick ass.
Really disappointed by the removal of hdmi ports in the dock. Would you at least replace them with more USB ports?
Some folks may complain about the fact that backers are getting their units only a month before retail. While I understand that it's disappointing (I'm disappointed myself,) it's nice to have Gamestick getting the extra funding (possible) and support of major retailers. This means we get a better and more retail worthy product which is awesome, in exchange for that we have to give up a little bit of the "only I have one," glory. Good trade in my perspective.
Awesome job everyone! I'm sure "most" of us are glad that you are nitpicking over every detail. Striving for perfection is the only way to go!
Can't wait to see the videos!
Cant wait, bring it on...
Thanks for update, glad to see the gamestick team is getting further along with the final end product
I really like the look of the dock and its "sliding cartridge". Seems like a good solution for putting the stick in/out. I also really appreciate these informative updates. They're really helping me get excited while understanding, as a stakeholder, what's going on. Gamestick: This is a Kickstarter done /right/. Cheers!
For anyone that was hoping to use this as an HDMI Switch, while I realize it's not the point, you should check out the HDMI Switch section of Monoprice: As low as $25, with remote: http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp…
For me, I prefer to use one "central" device as my HDMI switch -- either the TV or a receiver. I use a receiver these days and it works pretty well, but this probably isn't a solution for everyone.
keep working on it until its perfect, i really want GameStick to be a successful game console.
I keep looking in the mail expecting the dev version any day now - super excited! I for one am glad that there's a 2-month delay between the dev version shipping and the June rollout to backers. This gives us a nice cushion to make sure our games are perfect for when backers get their final product. If it were somehow able to ship now, there would be two months of unpolished, unfinished games, or no games at all! This way when people finally get it, they can plug it in and play spectacular, finished, polished games from day one! Isn't that what it's all about? Great work, guys!
Oh, and btw -- super excited about Hexage being on board!
Thanks for the update! Good luck, and I can't wait!
I am a little disappointed with the HDMI. Like @Gabriel, my TV only has one HDMI port, so I was really hoping for a pass-through switch at least. While not a game changer, it does make the dock less useful and enticing.
Which, btw, I think all you naysayers that are complaining now, would be complaining if your GameStick were not the best quality product, and especially if your friends/family bought one in the store, and theirs were better. We will be getting the same one as will be for retail, and I am happy with that.
I've said it already, and I'll say it again. We are waiting till June because we will be getting a better quality product. I would rather wait and get the better quality product. Wouldn't you, 0mie/any other naysayers/negative people/"kickstarter shoppers"?
Thanks for the update. Very thorough.
Does anyone know what the connection speed of the LAN port is ?
@0mie you don't seem to get it of what use is it if the gamestick is no success? it will only be a success if enough people buy one so it becomes interessting for bigger and smaller developers to develop games for the platform. a platform of about 5000 users (the backers) is super-uninteresting for even the smallest indie developer. if the gamestick fails and noone buys one you will get a few games and the system dies after a few months which leaves you a brick of hardware. beleive me, their "greed" is in your best interest.
and once again kickstarter is not a shop, it's a venture capital program for the regular joe, this includes the risk of roadmaps not beeing matched or projects totaly failing.
The missing HDMI could be crucial. Depending on what functionality it had. If I could have looped another source through that, it would have been cool because I have no channel left on my receiver, so it whould have been handy to use a shared one with, say the gamestick and e.g. the ps3.
I ordered a dock, but I would be willing to wait for a v 2.0 dock with HDMI.... At minimum a HDMI pass through (like old Nintendo connectors.....if the unit was on it took over...if off it was a passive pass through) this is the primary reason I ordered it as my TV only has one HDMI port.
I'm glad you're testing the unit to ensure it works well.
Not happy about the additional HDMI sockets. Did you ever consider polling at least the backers that funded the dock? Perhaps the dock was going to be used on a TV that could've used more HDMI sockets? Disappointing for sure.
Thanks for the update. Good to see that you care about making GameStick a good experience in all ways.
Too bad for the hdmi sockets, as I don't want to switch sources on the tv
for the rest, news are good
So major orders from major retailers, meaning us initial backers get shafted because you guys are greedy...they could have waited for their orders, this whole ordeal is lame. I don't want to another 2 months to get my units, this is ridiculous.
We should all get carrying cases or something extra...April has come and almost gone, yet still no delivery of the console. Still no name check, that was supposed to happen in March...delays and more delays, this is stupid for sure :/
Thanks for the update! Just checking, should the Designed By Me backers have received their Prototype Units already? Still waiting...
