Please note: Kickstarter counts your shipping costs as part of the total raised. To ensure we have enough to cover our project minimum costs, our funding goal accounts for this. Unfortunately, for backers outside of Australasia our shipping costs are higher than we'd like because of postage rates from New Zealand.
LGBTQ young people rarely see themselves represented in children's media and positive portrayals of LGBTQ main characters who live happily ever after are few and far between. This lack of visibility sends a harmful message to ALL children that being LGBTQ is less than because we don't appear in the stories they read.
We need to change that message.
A brand new adventure about identity, loyalty and love.
RAVEN WILD is the third in a series of LGBTQ inclusive children's books written by Caitlin Spice, Adam Reynolds & Chaz Harris, with illustrations by Christine Luiten & Bo Moore. It follows previous entries PROMISED LAND, released in 2017, and MAIDEN VOYAGE released in 2018 (co-written with Jaimee Poipoi). The first two books are currently the top two most-backed and most-funded LGBTQ children’s books on Kickstarter.
The first edition of RAVEN WILD will be a full color illustrated storybook aimed at 5-10 year olds with an expected release in June 2020.
As of 25 March, we've met our minimum target in 2 weeks of our campaign. We've now prepared a number of stretch goals and rewards!
A year ago, a major Canadian bookstore chain approached us to stock our books on their shelves. Unfortunately, almost every major publisher and distributor has turned us down. In order to make this happen ourselves, we've added a greater goal to raise $150,000 NZD as part of this campaign (half that after shipping costs & Kickstarter fees).
Everyone who has pre-ordered an e-book or printed copy of RAVEN WILD via this Kickstarter will receive the following bonus rewards (dependent on goals being reached and unless stated otherwise):
For more detail on why our highest stretch goal is so important to the future of our books and keeping them in print, please see our FAQs.
In Raven Wild, a reckless young boy named Hawk transitions into a courageous young woman called Raven. When Raven rescues an injured bird, she learns of an evil poacher's plan to steal a precious gem...a gem with the power to control all creatures great and small!
On her dangerous jungle quest to stop him and save an animal kingdom, a connection with a childhood friend called Finn soon transforms into love.
With ‘Promised Land Tales’, we’re creating the kind of children’s books we needed to see when we were kids. Through collaborations with authors of other queer identities, we hope to tell more 'stories that never were, but that always should have been'.
In the Promised Land universe, all are equal - no matter their gender, what they look like or who they love. We believe it’s important for LGBTQ youth and their peers to see themselves represented in positive ways, where who they are is never questioned or used as a plot device or a point of conflict.
Visibility in media is a powerful way to show young people they belong; if we don’t see ourselves in stories, we don’t see ourselves in the world.
So join our expedition to bring a little more kindness into the world, because everyone deserves to live happily ever after.

The following is a breakdown of how the Kickstarter funds will be spent if we reach our initial funding target:
Here are some of the public figures and publications that have talked about our previous two books:
Risks and challenges
A book like this involves countless hours of collaboration between the authors, illustrators, designer, editor, proofreader and printers. We’ve got the same great team involved from our previous two books to explore this new story and a proven track record in bringing them to completion.
Our printing partner BookPrint are based in Auckland, New Zealand. They did a wonderful job to ensure a high quality product and we’re looking forward to working with them again on Raven Wild.
Our timeline is realistic for completing all of the illustration/design work in time for our anticipated release in June 2020. The timeline is longer because our lead illustrator has a full-time job now and we have needed to account for this.
We’ll be keeping our backers informed throughout the process with updates and previews, including notifications of any potential delays.
Because we're based in New Zealand, our books need to be dispatched from here which is the reason our shipping costs are so high. We’ve explored trying to find fulfilment partners internationally for past Kickstarters, but the number of copies sold through the Kickstarter campaign has not been enough to meet their thresholds (and some need signing or other physical rewards to be added by us).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
