In March 2018, we were approached by a major Canadian bookstore chain interested in stocking our books. For the past year, we've been working with a foreign rights agent to find a publisher to publish our books in North America, or a distributor who might be willing to work with us to supply them.
Unfortunately, we've been turned down by almost every major publisher and distributors we've approached. They either don't represent self-published books or independent publishers with less than 10 titles. As you can imagine, being excluded because of these policies has been frustrating for us when we have a major bookseller who loves our books and wants them on their shelves as much as we do!
Because booksellers require stock to be returnable, we can't sell them a bulk order directly. This means that in order to get our books into distribution and on bookshelves in North America, our only option left to make that happen is to pay for a new print run, ship to North America and hire a local fulfilment company there to supply the stock. Obviously, this option isn't cheap, which means our total overall funding goal to make that happen is $150,000NZD (half that total once your shipping costs and the Kickstarter fees are deducted).
We'd love to continue expanding the Promised Land Tales series beyond Raven Wild, but the reality is that it won't be feasible to make more in the long-term unless we're able to secure mainstream distribution or publishing partners. Since we're currently being shut out of these distribution channels in key markets, it's preventing growth and funding that could be invested in funding future titles.
