A wonderful little connection to the past...
"When I was still a young girl, I had about twenty Felix the Cat toys, from tiny wooden ones to large stuffed Felixes that my parents brought back from France. I had a Felix the Cat costume that my French governess made for me to attend a girlfriend’s costume party. Also, I had a 16mm film by Otto Messmer called Felix Out of Luck. So I would sit watching my Felix film in my Felix the Cat costume surrounded by my entire collection of Felix the Cats.” - Shirley Clarke in a 1970s interview.
This is the same 16mm print (that's Shirley's handwriting on the cover) on loan from Shirley's fantastic daughter, Wendy Clarke! I'm not sure which Clarke DVD we'll add it to for a bonus feature (perhaps ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA since it opens with a shot of the Felix Bar in tribute to her favorite cat), but it's these small connections to history and the wonderful image of a young girl in a Felix costume sitting by a projector playing the film over and over again in her apartment that makes this job pretty cool.
