About this project
BRINGING PLAY BACK TO THE STREET: Get ready! This summer – June & July, 2014 – Champa Street in Denver, from 14th Street to the 16th Street Mall, will be transformed into a street arcade like you’ve never seen. This isn’t your father’s old-school arcade. Powered through a combination of the Denver Theatre District’s LED screens, building projections, street art, social media and a website, this immersive arcade is going to be a gaming experience for all!
ON THE WEB: The public will be able to interact with video game characters through personalized Twitter profiles powered by local improv comedians from Bovine Metropolis.
ON THE STREET: Once you’re on Champa Street, you’ll feel it – the pulse of the arcade bringing downtown to life. To play at the arcade is to be immersed in each game. The entire two city blocks will be full of street art and custom structures that will transport players to a modern game world. The enormity and excitement is going to blow people away.
GAMES: Built by the Denver-based, award-winning creative team of Legwork Studio and Mode Set, the games will allow players to use a smart phone and their body as controllers while playing on the huge Denver Theater District LED screens, as well as projections on buildings. Microsoft Kinect devices will be utilized so participants feel like they’ve jumped right into the video games.
CULTURAL PROGRAMMING: The experience doesn’t stop with just games. Every night the arcade is open, the public can expect the unexpected. Businesses and organizations in the surrounding area are gearing up to extend the gaming story with karaoke, live music, dancing, theatre and comedy. Anything can happen. Anything is possible.
WHY: Gaming often gets a bad rap. Most people associate it with an activity that’s just for kids, geeks and sci-fi nerds. We want to change that. Studies continually show that play of any kind makes us more creative, curious and happy. It even contributes to helping build trust between strangers--what a novel thought! By infusing play into public space, we hope to build a community that is more creative and connected. It's no coincidence that the most innovative people attribute play as the gateway to a good idea. If we can help inspire new ideas by integrating play into the built environment, then our project is a success. At the end of the day, who doesn't want their city to be more fun?

Risks and challenges
Are you technically qualified to make the street arcade work?
Oh Heck Yeah! Both Legwork Studio and Mode Set have a long, successful history of delivering work on time and within budget for some of the most well-known brands in the world. Together they have worked on building games for Google that utilized next generation browser technology. Collectively, their clients include the The New York Times, Coke, Sony and The North Face. The industry's critics agree, these guys do amazing work. They have received recognition from the Webby Awards, Favourite Website Awards and SXSW. Check out the portfolio of Legwork Studio and Mode Set.
Is this the first time you've produced this type of event? What is the team's track record?
Oh Heck No. For the past two years, in partnership with the City and County of Denver, we have prototyped the Denver Theatre District’s LED screens and downtown building facades as a canvas for digital video art, community karaoke with audio-reactive visuals and interactive video games. Our efforts earned us Best of Denver 2012 in Westword and recognition from Communication Arts and CreateDigitalMotion. We see the street arcade as the next step in bringing the community together to pioneer a new creative frontier. Our intention is build an open platform that will allow us to collaborate with more like-minded and talented people. Check out our past 3D video mapping event and video game prototype on the Denver Theatre District’s LED screen.

Will you be able to secure the needed permits from the City?
Oh Heck Yeah! Denver Arts + Venues and Councilwoman Judy Montero have committed to help OhHeckYeah navigate the City’s permitting process. We are working with Councilwoman Montero’s office to organize a planning committee to ensure the project follows all permitting regulations and procedures while maintaining the project’s creative integrity.
Doesn’t a project of this scale cost more than $100,000 to build?
Oh Heck Yeah! The street arcade's total budget is about $750,000. To date, we have a $250,000 in-kind commitment from the project's partners and a committed cash contribution of $225,000--$200,000 from ArtPlace America and $25,000 from the Denver Theatre District. This leaves a $275,000 balance. This is where Kickstarter comes in. We hope to raise at least $100,000 from the public. We feel that because this project occupies public space, the community should play an important role in bringing it to life. We see this campaign as not only a way to help raise the remaining funds but as a way to include the community in the creative process. We have designed our Kickstarter awards as an opportunity for the public to help contribute to the project's outcome. We hope you'll join us in creating a first-of-its-kind video game and arcade experience. #OhHeckYeahLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
