About this project
Since 2008, The Maysles Cinema in Harlem has been a beacon of documentary and independent film in upper Manhattan. Founded by documentary film pioneer Albert Maysles and directed by Jessica Green, the only film house north of 96th street, the mission of the cinema has always been to exhibit new, unique and classic documentary films. All while enhancing the exhibition with discussion, performance and other forms of community engagement.
For the past two summers, in the spirit of community, the cinema has brought thematic, free, live music and dj sets, followed by music documentaries and concert films, to the public. Held in various scenic parks around Harlem, the festival has played a role in the neighborhood's long-standing tradition of engagement, and has provided community-fostering entertainment to thousands of New Yorkers.
Join the Maysles Cinema as we produce the "Summer of Music" this summer. We need your support to find the best music and film yet, and bring it to the people of New York. We will partner with local parks to find the ideal locations to listen to music, dance, and watch films - all brought to the public for free! We will bring together incredible musicians and DJs to provide the soundtrack for five nights of music on the screen.
Our five night program will be spread across the summer, and will cost a total of $10,000. We are reaching out to all of our friends on Kickstarter to help us raise half of that - $5,000. Join us as we bring talented musicians and filmmakers together for this special summer series.
We hope that you'll be able to support us now at any level you can, and please help us this summer by joining in the fun of the 3rd annual "Summer of Music!"
