UPDATE 3/26/16
A preview edition of Dubious Tales Issue #1 is now available at the link below. I'm still doing final editorial passes and working on better PDF formatting, but I thought I would post the issue to let everyone read how the story of Dubious Tales kicks off.

Hey Gang, Thanks for your interest in Dubious Tales. I've been working on this story for a few years now, and I'm thrilled to finally make it a reality. For me, nothing is as satisfying as seeing a story come to life in sketch form, then pencil and inks. Please consider pledging even a dollar to help this unique adventure (the story and the Kickstarter) along. Thank you for your support. -Pat

About This Project Dubious Tales is a 6-issue (165 pages total) limited series fictional adventure comic that starts on the docks of 1930's San Francisco, dives into the waters of the Pacific Ocean, and ends in parts unknown. It's a story of international intrigue and strained family loyalty, starring Moe Berg and Hubert Wilkins, two unique and fascinating characters distilled from the pages of 20th century history.

I started writing (and rewriting) Dubious Tales as an homage to the great adventure stories of the 1930's and 40's. I began funding art production last year on the first two issues with my own money. It has been a blast so far, but I've come to realize I need help bringing it into existence before we all die of old age.

Dubious Tales: The Story
Authorities have caught wind that someone is supplying a rogue Japanese admiral with illegal war materials out of 1930's Port of San Francisco. A mysterious group called the New York Committee have given American baseball player Moe Berg and Australian explorer George Hubert Wilkins the mission to uncover the truth behind the rumors. The adventure they embark on across the Pacific will irreversibly change the fate of one noble family and the balance of world's military powers.

I don't want to spoil the rest of the story, but here's what you're getting when you support Dubious Tales: an international action-adventure, a cat-and-mouse spy chase, early 20th century baseball, explosions, a WW2-era submarine, a secret naval base, a polar expedition, sabotage, a speedboat chase, a daring rescue attempt, a raging inferno, and quite a few yarns spun by history's least known, but most fascinating characters... Moe Berg and Hubert Wilkins.  All of this in just 6 issues? I know, right. Hard to believe, but it's all there in glorious black and white. I loved writing this story, and I'm confident you'll love reading it.

Dubious Tales: The Art
After an extensive search for an artist whose style and quality matched the look I wanted for Dubious Tales, I was lucky enough to find the work of the amazing Elias Martins. Even more amazingly, he agreed to help bring my story to life. I included some of the outstanding imagery he has created for the first two issues on this page to give you a sense of the look we are going for in the series.

Who Is This Killik Guy & What is Oort Cloud Comics?
I started Oort Cloud Comics in 2010 as a vehicle for telling the kind of adventure and science fiction stories I wanted to see on comic book shelves. Previously, I spent the 2000's learning and working on the craft of visual effects and compositing. I was fortunate enough to work on a number of great projects with dozens of super talented artists from whom I learned a great deal about the art of visual storytelling. I would never trade those experiences for the world, but over time I realized I was spending much of my life telling other peoples' stories. When the birth of my daughter necessitated a move back to Chicago, I decided it was time to start getting serious about writing and producing the stories I wanted to tell.

In 2011, I finished work on Oort Cloud's first book, a sort of science-fiction creature western called Shepperton's Waltz. You can find it on Comixology and Apple iBooks for purchase. Or if you just email me (killik@oortcloudcomics.com), I'd be happy to send you a PDF of the book for free. The first time you do anything is the hardest and Shepperton was no exception. I could write a book on what to do and not to do while starting up a comic book production. I'm sure there are more lessons lurking out there, but I like to think I learned a great deal from that experience and am approaching the production of Dubious Tales a little older and a little wiser.

Below is small slice of the art created for Shepperton's Waltz. If you are interested in seeing more, please click here.

How Will the Money Be Used
The money donated to this campaign will be used to pay artist fees for the pencils, inks, and shading of the interior black and white pages and the color covers for issues #3 through #6 of Dubious Tales. Additionally, a portion of the budget has been allocated to pay for a small print run of the collected paperback edition and the custom sketches. The balance of the requested amount will cover mailing supplies and postage to fulfill the award level items.

Over the past few months, I have developed a detailed spreadsheet to account for every conceivable hidden cost of producing the art and printing the book. Random acts of nature notwithstanding, I am confident that I have planned and allocated the appropriate resources to deliver your award level items in an efficient and timely manner.

Risks and challenges

One challenge will be making sure we keep art production on schedule. Elias and I have reviewed the plan for art delivery and confirmed that we built in enough time for him to create all the required pages on time.

The other major challenge is to limit project exposure to unforeseen costs related to shipping. Domestic shipping is relatively straightforward to research and plan for, but international can be tricky. I am confident the additional shipping costs included in the relevant award levels are accurate and adequate to cover the additional postage. Additionally, I plan to use Amazon Fulfillment Services to ensure the project gets the best price possible for postage, both domestic and international.
