Thank you all backers for the amazing support...You made it possible!
With your support we ended the campaign with success. If you missed our amazing kickstarter campaign you still can pre-order watches and straps at www.birline.com. Yet again, a big thank you!
As young professionals, we were looking to buy a luxury watch with a clean and classic design at an affordable price - but most watches looked and felt the same. We wanted something different that looked good in our modern lifestyle; something stylish, affordable (priced under $250, £150) and practical.
Unique fabric: We experimented with many materials and designs until we stumbled upon Harris Tweed. When we began with to working with this unique material we soon realised that no one in the world uses material like this to make watches. This was our "aha" moment.
Genuine Harris Tweed is made from pure virgin wool which has been dyed and spun on the islands and handwoven at the home of a weaver in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Harris Tweed has been in production since 1846 and is protected by the Harris Tweed Act of Parliament 1993, which strictly outlines the conditions in which the cloth can be made.
Unique Style: We use the highest quality tweed and handpick the brightest colours to match our sleek ultra-thin style with simple and sophisticated lines. These sophisticated and minimalist timepieces are perfect for both casual and formal occasions.
High quality materials: Swiss movement, highest quality Harris Tweed, stainless steel, waterproof casing and a two year guarantee.
Colors: At Birline we love colours. We think colours let you express who you are and should change as often as your mood changes. You shouldn’t be stuck wearing brown or grey and that’s why Birline gives you the freedom to experiment with a rainbow of colours to match any occasion.
Choose your color: (1) Black noir. (2) Marble gray. (3) Pine green. (4) Northern grass. (5) Forest green. (6) Midnight blue. (7) Cranberry. (8) Spicy orange. (9) Light moss. (10) Mustard yellow. (11) Violet. (12) Lavender. (13) Teal orchid. (14) Royal blue. (15) Skye blue. (16) Fuchsia. (17) Hot pink. (18) Sweet pink.
Me (Alex) and Andy (the founders of Birline) are two swedish people who meet when they were living in Barcelona. I have just moved to London after having spent the last year working on an ultra-thin watch with a unique Harris Tweed strap. This started out as a search for the perfect watch: affordable, versatile and, of course, beautiful. Our disappointment with what was available led to the idea that we should design and make our own line of watches.
Andy is a multitalented designer who has worked both with product design and clothing design for more than 15 years. He is used to starting projects from zero and overseeing them from beginning to end. Andy likes to work with unconventional materials in a novel ways that attract and surprise people. Harris Tweed is not only incredibly high quality but also one of the rarest fabrics and so to find a new and fun use of this amazing fabric was both a challenge and a great reward. Quality fabrics and colours have always been a big part of his design and that is reflected in this very colourful new collection.
I (Alex) have had a large interest in watches since I was a child and I have been an avid collector for some time, owning many different watches throughout the years. Creating our own watch has been a dream from many years. When I was 17 I visited a Swiss watch manufacturer in Switzerland and got inspired by the craftsmanship behind making a quality timepiece. I have been working for many large companies but always wanted to create a product that is close to my heart and appreciated by others.
When we started to design the Birline watch, we wanted to achieve 3 goals:
Style (a balanced mix of sophistication and elegance with modern minimalism)
Affordability (keep the price under £150, $250)
Practicality (Birline can be worn everywhere: from day to night )
After talking to various suppliers and manufacturers, we found the best quality materials.
To achieve practicality with design, we decided to use Quartz movements. Quartz movements offer incredible time-keeping accuracy and virtually no maintenance.
Since the start we wanted to have an ultra-thin watch. We found that at 40mm. It was the perfect case diameter: not too large for a dress watch, not too small for a casual watch. It is also a perfect size for both women and men.
The strap was the most important element of our watch. We decided to go with a material that is known for its versatility and its use in luxury fashion: tweed. With the help of a strap maker, we developed a unique strap made of 100% tweed, with a soft leather backing for comfort.
As for the style, we followed minimalistic approach. We took inspiration from both Scandinavian minimalism and Barcelona’s colourful, creative design.
To achieve a classic, timeless look, we had to remove all unnecessary distractions so common in modern watches. We took the “less-is-more” approach, and used a classic watch design language. We were able to slim down the case thickness to just under 7mm by using a special manufacturing process.
This size is a good fit for both men and women, and it can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
To stay consistent with a classic theme, we kept the dial design very legible, free of any unnecessary distraction.

After much research into the perfect fit for manufacturer, we finally found one that fits to our requirements. They can accommodate small production batch as well as very large mass production requirements.
With the final sketches done, we sent the watch to the manufacturer. The manufacturer built a complete set of prototypes for us to inspect and to validate the design. When we received the prototypes, we were extremely happy with how they looked and felt on the wrist. In simple words, we loved them!
