This art book began its life approximately 65 million years after the deaths of its subjects - Autumn 2016 to be more precise.
During the month of October I participated in the annual #Inktober challenge where artists are encouraged to make a new ink drawing every day for the entire month. After some self-reflection I decided to illustrate something that had no purpose other than my own creative fulfillment, so I selected Dinosaurs - my first obsessive interest from childhood. As I delved into these drawings I had the opportunity to revel in the new science that had developed in paleontology since I had last researched the ancient animals. So many new discoveries have been unearthed over the last two decades that it felt like every drawing was the start of a new research project.
During the month of November I also encountered and participated in #DrawDiNovember where artists are encouraged to make new Dinosaur drawings throughout that month, which filled out more of the book and kept my enthusiasm and energy for the project on course.
I capitalized on that creative momentum by starting a fully rendered digital painting of a pair of dinosaurs from the Denver area. The process for this included research of fossil skeletons in person at both the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Morrison Natural History Museum, including attending a Paleoart workshop at the Morrison Museum. I also spent some time to observe Dinosaur relatives from life such as the Cassowaries and Hornbills at the Denver Zoo.
Inside the Book
Primeval Kings: The Art of Ken Kokoszka is an 8.5" x 11" perfect-bound book with a gloss laminate softcover. The interior includes 50+ pages including black and white ink and graphite illustrations in addition to full color images of "Jurassic Denver" a paleoart painting of a ferocious encounter between an Allosaurus fragilis and a Stegosaurus stenops.
You can follow this link to view a sampling of the illustrations collected in Primeval Kings.
You can follow this link to view a sample section of the book's layout.
Each illustration also includes a brief caption of text interpreting the scene as the prehistoric animals are interacting with their environment in their day to day life.
Every pledge level that includes a physical book will come with the artist's signature and some pledge levels will come with original sketches of dinosaurs on the title page.
At the end of the book is a "Special Thanks" section and backing at some pledge levels will put the generous contributor's names in the list.

At the Allosaurus reward tier and above you can pick any Dinosaur you want and I will sketch it on the title page of the book for you. If you have trouble deciding I'll help you out!
In addition to the title page sketch, you can select and one Dinosaur and I will create a new 9"x12" pen and ink illustration of that animal and send it with your copy of the book. If you can't decide which Dinosaur to select, I'll help you out!
In addition to the title page sketch, you can collaborate with me to come up with a prehistoric dinosaur scene that you want to see brought to life and I will create a new 11"x17" graphite drawing of the animals and then I will create a fully finished digital painting (similar to Jurassic Denver). I'll send you the drawing and a print & PDF of the painting along with your book. If you can't decide which Dinosaur(s) to select I'll help you out!
I've added new $75.00 reward tiers for the last days of the campaign!
The Collector level rewards include the title page sketch and one of nine one-of-a-kind illustrations from the book!
Risks and challenges
There are nearly zero barriers between me and the backers putting this book on their shelf.
The art has been created, the text for the book is written, and the layout of the entire book has been completed, except for any images that are commissioned as part of a reward tier and require Backer input.
I have also selected a reliable vendor to print the book.
After the books arrive on my door step it will be a simple matter to sign and sketch in the books before shipping them to the generous backers (barring any prehistoric animals eating the books before they arrive, but I think we are about 65 million years too late for that to be a real risk.)
Some of the pledge levels come with additional creative works on my part. To make sure I have enough padding in my delivery estimates I worked under the assumption that I would have to fulfill every possible sketch, ink drawing, and digital painting tier and accounted for enough time and then some.
In all likelihood the books will actually ship earlier than the target date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
