Hi! I'm Jeff, the inventor of Play Ball! America's Favorite Pastime. For the past four years I've been developing a board game which almost perfectly simulates the actual game of baseball. Anything you can do on the field, you can do in this game. Whether it's stealing second base,
or stretching a single into a double, or picking off a runner at first,
or bunting the runners over to the next base,
this game is the most authentic baseball board game you'll ever see.
Here's what I'm raising the funds for. After developing the prototype and extensively play-testing the game and researching manufacturers, it's finally ready for production. The funds raised will be used to have this game professionally produced. Backers at the $40.00 level and above will receive one of these professionally manufactured games. Let me tell you how it's played.
The Classic Version
The Classic version of Play Ball! is for anyone who likes board games. Yes, it's baseball, but there's a tremendous amount of strategy built in. The classic game includes: a Pitcher deck and a Batter deck, Strategy cards,
Call To The Bullpen cards, as well as tokens, scoreboard markers,
an instruction booklet and a game board. 2 to 18 people can play this game at a time, which makes it fun for the whole family. Once the group is divided into two teams, one team becomes the pitcher and the other team the batter. The pitcher plays an Action card (an Action card is a red, blue, green, or purple card) and is a Pitch card.
The batter then responds with a card of the same color from the Batter deck. For example...
If he or she can't respond with a card of the same color, a Wild card may be played (Wild cards are black and white). For example...
If the batter responds with a Wild card, the pitcher may then counter with a Wild card of his or her own. For example...
Staying one step ahead of your opponent is the name of the game. For instance, the pitcher may play a red Fastball pitch...
...to which the batter must respond with a red card of his or her own. Suppose the batter has two red cards: a Ball card and a Swing-N-Miss card.
The batter would most likely play the Ball card since it goes in his or her favor. Then let's say the pitcher throws a blue Curve Ball pitch...
...but the batter has no blue cards.
Maybe he or she has a Hit Batter Wild card.
By playing this card, the batter is hit by the pitch and is allowed to go to first base. Now that there's a runner at first base, the pitcher could play a Wild card of his or her own such as a Pick Off Wild card.
The ball is thrown to first and the runner is picked off for an out. However, the batter might come back with an Error Wild card...
...which causes the first baseman to drop the ball on the play and the base runner is now safe. And so it goes. Game play is fast paced, so keep on your toes because you never know what might happen next!
The Advanced Version
The Advanced version is played in much the same way as the Classic version, but with a few additions. First of all the Advanced version includes an additional Pitcher and Batter deck and a Roster deck for each team.
The Advanced version also includes Game Changer cards.
A starting pitcher as well as 9 position players are chosen by each team to play the game. These cards are placed face up on the table whenever that player is up to bat.
Each card lists two things the batter cannot do during that at bat. For instance, he or she may not be able to hit a blue Single or a Sac Bunt. This means that even if the batter has either of those cards in his or her hand, they may not be played at that time. Another addition to the Advanced version is the Game Changer card. The Game Changer card may be played by the pitcher or batter whenever applicable. Let's say the pitcher plays a green Slider pitch and the batter responds with a green Single card.
With no one on base, the batter is allowed to stretch the single into a double. But be careful, it could be risky! The pitcher might play an Outfield Assist Game Changer card,
...which means that the outfielder throws the runner out at second. Now suppose that the pitcher plays a blue Curve Ball pitch and the batter responds with a blue Home Run card.
The pitcher could throw down a Highlights Game Changer card,
...which means that the center fielder leaps at the last second and catches the ball just before it goes over the fence, taking away the home run. What about the batter? Is he or she able to use any Game Changer cards? Absolutely! Let's say that the pitcher plays a purple Breaking Ball pitch and the batter responds with a purple Ground Ball card,
...which would normally be an automatic out at first base. The batter can play a Booting The Ball Game Changer card,
...causing the infielder to boot the ball on the play, allowing the batter to reach first base safely. In addition to the game play described above, the players can also send the runners, bring in a pinch hitter, toss the manager, call to the bullpen, and employ various other strategies, making this game highly competitive.
Whether you like baseball or just a good competitive game, this game was designed with you and your family in mind. Four years of careful thought has gone into this game. Four years of revision after revision. Four years of play-testing this game with family, friends, and yes, even perfect strangers has made this game what it is today. This game is unlike any other game you will ever play. Back Play Ball! at any one of the levels listed, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed! And thanks for making Play Ball! America's Favorite Pastime America's favorite pastime once again.
Risks and challenges
There are always risks and challenges when doing a project like this. We have worked hard for the past four years at minimizing the risks and overcoming the challenges that have arisen. Most of the challenges have been in developing the game, making sure it represents the actual game of baseball accurately. We have accomplished that. Other challenges have been in putting all the pieces in place to ensure that the production of this game will go as smoothly as humanly possible. The risks, however, are another issue. We can't promise that there is no risk, but what we can promise is that we will do everything within our power to make sure you as a backer receive exactly what you were promised. You are the only reason this game will ever see the light of day and we are extremely grateful for your help. We would never intentionally do anything that might jeopardize your confidence in us. We have researched several game manufacturers who are ready to go when the time comes. We have put in place the things necessary to make this project successful. Kickstarter obviously has the biggest safeguard in place already, that is, that no money changes hands unless the project funds. Beyond that, you have our word that we will do everything we can to make good on our promises. Thank you for your support and for your trust. We don't take that lightly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
