About

"Hey guys, looks like the museum failed." What? No, absolutely not! The museum is still alive and well. It's an idea that won't go away, that occupies our consant thoughts. At worst I would say that this Kickstarter campaign failed. Why? Two reasons.

First, our goal was pretty high. We knew that going in. But if we only aimed for and got $8500 in rewards, we would not have been able to do very much with it. You would have been sorely disappointed with what that annual pass got you.

Second, our campaign didn't spread as far as it should have. We traced metrics through Facebook, Twitter and other online social media. You guys did a decent job of helping us spread the word. But we really missed the mark on the local media. We tried, it just didn't stick. And many of the larger LEGO fan blogs didn't pick us up. Maybe they figured we were too local to interest their worldwide fan bases. Or maybe they didn't like our head shots.

"So the museum is still happening then?" Oh, definitely. Maybe not as huge as we had envisioned, but we'll enjoy our holidays then rework our vision, find additional funding sources beyond what we currently have, and present a new opportunity for you to help. Maybe it will be on Kickstarter, maybe not.

This was a great learning opportunity though. We gained so much knowledge through the metrics about what you wanted, where you came from and how willing many people were to help make it happen.

So enjoy your holidays and keep an eye out for what's coming next. You can check in here or join the conversation via our communication list at http://www.brixmuseum.com/. We'd love to have you continue to join us on our journey!

I love collecting. And building. And sharing with others. And... warehouses? I've always been attracted to large open indoor spaces where creativity and inspiration can abound without threat of rain, vandals, or pigeons. After running my own Bricklink (secondary market LEGO® parts) store for several years I decided I wanted to go bigger. I'd been picking up odd parts as extras in orders, from thrift stores, and from free bins. While they were fun to look at I thought it would be nice to share them with others. Anyone can go look at the Bricklink catalog and see every part ever made. But to see it all under one roof? Now that would be awesome!

If you wanted to see a LEGO Museum, where would you go? Billund, Denmark, home of LEGO? Or you could visit the Czech Republic. Still too far away? Maybe Ohio is more suitable. But west of the Mississippi? Nothing.

Hence, BRIX. Build, Rebuild, Inspire and Experience.

Of course a museum should be about more than just walking through a stuffy space to see things. It should be engaging, hands on, an experience! Have you ever heard of Znap? Do you know how it works with the rest of the LEGO system? Do you want to play with some? Why not!

Or maybe you'd like to come to a build your own holiday ornament workshop where you can get advice on building tips and build an ornament to take home. Or you're looking for a fresh summer camp idea for your kids.

What's the history of the brick? What does 3001 mean? Find out with interactive displays, detailed layouts and more information than you knew existed!

Do you like art? View, purchase, or even sell your art at BRIX! And don't limit your media to just LEGO. Paintings, wood carvings and wax sculptures inspired by the plastic brick are all welcome.

Private funding is secured but we also want to make this project available to the public to support. With what is available we can open and be ready to operate, but at a very limited scale. We aren't interested in loans. We'd rather take that money that would be spent on interest and invest it back into our guests and visitors. And supporters!

We have negotiated a great lease rate on a space. As members of PortLUG there is no shortage of people that are willing to help us set this up and make it happen. We have friends of all skills and backgrounds that are helping us make this dream a reality including a teacher, a LEGO historian, and a business woman.

The majority of operating expenses will be covered by visitors to the museum experience. A retail store will also bring income as well as camp, classes, and events throughout the year. With this income we can continue to improve the experience and expand. We also plan to invest back into the local community by hiring employees and participating in philanthropic causes.

The question is not if but when. We will absolutely be securing the keys to our space in early 2017 and setting up the most amazing experience we can dream of. But we would love for you to be a part of this too. Whether you are looking for a unique gift for the LEGO fan in your life or to be immortalized in LEGO, we want to offer you an opportunity to join in with what we are doing.

The Classic Space Dag Brick

Besides the other rewards we're offering (many of which are exclusive just for us) we will also offer a once in a lifetime opportunity. When this campaign meets its goals, every single person who contributed will have their name added to a LEGO-built plaque that will sit right by the front door of the museum for everyone to see. Once this campaign ends though, that plaque will be closed for good. We will put all of our Kickstarter supporters names on there and never add another one to it, ever again. This is just one way we want to honor you for what you're doing here today.

Everyone who contributes $5 or more will also receive an invite to our pre-grand opening, just for donors.

What are we going to do with your money? First, secure our lease. Then we need to build it up with display space. We also need to acquire more collections and pieces. Not every display we want to set up can be ready on opening day; those will grow over time. See this spreadsheet for a detailed working analysis of how we will spend funds over the next 2 years.

We will also develop our education arm with a dedicated staff and curriculum built from the ground up. And the same brainstorming will also develop the events arm offering birthday parties, corporate events and the like.

Finally our gift shop will include well curated items that will enhance your experience at home. The Mini Museum rewards being offered here are just the start of what will be meaningful items to take home.

We appreciate your support but we also really appreciate you spreading the word!

Huge thanks to Boone at Toy Replay for his mad production skills on our video and to Jason for letting us crash his LEGO room for the shoot.

Risks and challenges

Brian has been creating house plans for over 16 years. He understands details, where to flex on the norm and where to stand firm. He also excelled at project management when he got thrown into planning playground projects worth $40,000 and $125,000 at his kids' school.

Erik works for an investment firm and understands money. Market trends, value over time, returns and knowing when to invest are everyday activities for him. He is responsible for making sure people get more money back than they put in.

Our market research indicates that the time is ripe for a LEGO themed museum in the Portland, OR area. Even a small percentage of visitors would make this venture a success. Museums tend to attract about 3% of a given population within a 25 mile radius. Even at 1/2% attraction rate we will still stay in the black with enough funds to expand.

Initial expenses are the biggest obstacle. By creating a great experience from the start our early guests will be amazed and spread the word. If our experience leaves you with something to be desired, you will tell your friends not to bother visiting and we will be sunk.

Once the experience is created, recurring income will cover operating expenses, new displays, employees, plenty of coffee for the break room and lots of brick.

One of the issues we are aware of is the potential for declining popularity of the experience over time. We are already discussing how to make sure the core attractions stay fresh while also introducing new and seasonal rotating displays. We need to ensure we have enough space to develop and store new displays while still giving the main floor adequate area to create a large enough experience.

What if you purchase a larger reward and we are unable to fulfill the long term promise that comes with it? In that unfortunate and unlikely case we will be sure that your money will not be wasted. Even at our own expense we will discuss with you transfering your lifetime passes to another venue of your choice or make sure your statue is rehomed where it will continue to get the exposure it was intended to.

And Brian and Erik will continue building and displaying their epic models at conventions like usual, dreaming of the next amazing experience they can create for you.
