Risks and challenges
Here is a description of risks and challenges for this project:
TECHNICAL: From the sub to the buoy technical risk is minimal. HD video, audio and controlling commands through fiber optic cable does not represent high technical risk. Communication from buoy to onshore internet access point has been established for over 5 miles which means that we are currently restricted to "close to onshore access points" locations to begin with. The upcoming challenge will be to design our comm link with well defined locational mobile network operators with effective engineering design. 4G technology (as it becomes more available worldwide) will enable further location deployment.
LATENCY: (the time an internet packet takes to travel from the submarine to your computer and back to the sub) by far is the most important and challenging part of an immersive experience. Our risk here is to deal with a delay between piloting and the submarine movement. We will optimize everything for latency, but there will be a small latency because of internet lag. Our strategy is focused on developing an interface that can diminish the effect on the users perception.
OPERATION: Continuous operation and working all day long presents risk. There are several risks to consider including disconnections to power sources. Natural risks include cloudy underwater days as ocean visibility changes daily with conditions varying day to day. We are going to be on location providing security and maintenance to the operation as we scale up.
