I’m Eric Logan, owner of Gamma Ray Games. Since opening doors in 2009 Gamma Ray Games has been proud to be one of Seattle’s premiere tabletop gaming stores and THE store for the Capitol Hill neighborhood. When we first opened doors our quaint gaming loft – which maxes out at 16 players – served as a fantastic community hub and gaming space.
Our community expanded much more quickly than we expected and demand for gaming space in the loft far exceeded our capacity. Even as we partnered with neighboring bars to host additional events, demand continued to grow. “How can we find more space to game?” people kept asking. So we’re making you a LOUNGE!
We secured a perfect space just a block up the street from our store – we’re going to call it the Raygun Lounge, and it’s going to be our new and improved gaming loft. Seriously. We’ve signed the lease and the space is ours.
SO, WHY KICKSTARTER?
Great question. Here’s where Kickstarter comes in:
1) The Raygun Lounge is your space. It’s for you, our community of gamers, and we want your input on what to include as we build the space. Kickstarter is a fantastic way to involve our community in the process. The pledge levels provide you with different ways to (literally) put your name on the space, early event sign ups and even some exclusive reservation opportunities to give you the chance to personalize the lounge even before it opens. Everyone who pledges $10 or more will have their name permanently and prominently painted on a wall that will remain untouched for the life of the lounge so that we can remember who was there from the beginning.
2) Tricking out the space costs more. The better we make it, the more it costs. The more we kick it, the more we trick it. Which is to say the more we raise through Kickstarter, the more awesome we can make your space.
Our vision for The Raygun Lounge is to create an ideal space for adults to play board, card, roleplaying, miniatures and possibly even console games. Like our current store and gaming space, the Lounge will be bright and well lit with plenty of natural and non-fluorescent lighting. All the tables will be spacious – at least 4’x4’ with some twice that size. There will be space-efficient wooden benches and sturdy steel chairs for your comfort and convenience. The game lockers will be large enough to easily store all the materials you need for your weekly gaming events. The music will be pleasing and eclectic – loud enough to make you feel relaxed while talking but quiet enough that you can easily hear yourselves doing it. We’ll even provide a “32 flat-screen for console games. A range of beverages will be served, from coffee to beer to a range of juice and tea. Eventually we want to provide you with…wait for it…a FULL BAR (push goal #1). The food will be affordable and healthy, featuring locally sourced sweet and savory dishes, with a rotating seasonal menu so you won’t get bored with it if you attend a weekly event. All of this and more will be made possible if we make our Kickstarter goal.
I’M IN! WHAT CAN I DO?
Look to your right. Seriously, take a look over there. You're going to have to scroll down a bit because we included twenty nine different pledge levels for you to choose from. TWENTY NINE! That's how committed we are that you (or your company, we're hip to the business) are able to join us in this.
So take a look around, pick a level that works for you and meet us over at the lounge in August for a beer to celebrate our mutual success. We'll be the ones in vests and ties.
latest (08/08) update:
With less than 24 hours left, we’ve done it! We’ve met every goal we set and even the total surprise goal we threw way out on the end there. Congratulations. To you and to all of us. We thought about throwing in one more little goal to bang the drum a little more but you know what? We’ve done it. This last 24 hours is for anyone else who wants to be a part of it.
There are plenty of fun pledge levels left for anyone who has yet to pledge – or for current backers to switch to or add. And – as most of you are already well aware – in addition to the listed pledge-level rewards all the stretch rewards announced over the past few weeks still stand:
pledge $10 or more you get your name on the wall (which is looking quite big all of a sudden)
pledge $20 or more and receive the Raygun D20
pledge $50 or more and you’ll own the exclusive Raygun Lounge t-shirt
pledge $100 or more and you’ll be strutting your stuff in the legendary Raygun underwear that all of the kids are talking about (oh, they will be).
For us, it’s time to get started. You’ve laid out some big challenges and we’ve got a lot of work to do to be ready for the PAX Pink Party that we’ve scheduled with the Gaymers at the end of the month (have you seen that Ellen McLain video? That thing’s going to be amazing!) and the Founders Party we’re planning shortly before it (we’ll announce the date and send out your invite very soon).
As always, when we work on the space we’re going to leave the windows unpapered so you can observe and check on our progress any time. After all, it is your lounge we’re building.
