About

In 1928, author Henry Beston wrote his Cape Cod nature classic, The Outermost House, after spending a year observing the elements in a 20x16 cottage on the dunes of Eastham’s Coast Guard Beach. The book became an inspiration for the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore by John F. Kennedy, and was acknowledged as such when Beston’s seaside shanty was dedicated as a National Literary Landmark in 1964.

Based on the book, Henry Beston’s Cape Cod, by Don Wilding, this film is a story with roots on Cape Cod, but also in the international landscape. Before writing The Outermost House, Beston served as an ambulance driver for the American Field Service on the front lines during the Battle of Verdun in France during World War I. After returning home to Massachusetts, the scarred veteran retreated to Cape Cod, where he tapped in to the healing power of nature, and that brought forth a literary classic. Years later, The Outermost House was cited by the National Park Service as to why the Outer Beach should be preserved.

Wilding, co-founder of the Henry Beston Society of Cape Cod, is producing the film. An award-winning Massachusetts newspaperman, Don was proclaimed as an “Outermost House Expert” by the Cape Codder of Orleans and has presented over 100 lectures about Henry Beston since 2001. He has worked rough cut screenings from the documentary film into his lecture programs. Among the hosts for his lectures have been the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Thoreau Society, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, and the Cape Cod Writers’ Center.

A rough cut screening of Henry Beston’s Cape Cod was held at the Newburyport Film Festival last month and at the Chatham Orpheum Theater on Cape Cod over Columbus Day Weekend.

The film includes interviews with Cape Cod writers Robert Finch (who penned the introduction to the most recent editions of The Outermost House), David Gessner, and Joan Anderson, Beston biographer Daniel Payne, Beston’s “Chimney Farm” Caretaker Gary Lawless, and Jonathan Moore, who, as a legislative assistant to Sen. Leverett Saltonstall in 1960, worked on legislation for the Cape Cod National Seashore. The music soundtrack features pianist Jacqueline Schwab (known for her work with Ken Burns). Narration is provided by Bob Seay of WGBH-FM in Boston.

The response and press have been great, but now we're on to the next phase!

Over the next 30 days, we have a goal of raising $10,000 to cover production costs (which includes video services, and fees for actors, clothing, and other props) to continue production on the film.

Henry Beston’s Cape Cod is a grass roots work-in-progress. Funding for the film depends entirely on grants and contributions. Production of this feature-length project have been broken into small fundable sub-projects that will be streamed as online episodes, or “webisodes,” while also being used to help in soliciting distribution channels, such as PBS.

Thanks to contributions from grants and an earlier Kickstarter campaign in the summer of 2012, we were able to produce a five-minute trailer, a 10-minute episode, and have enough footage on hand to produce more episodes. Reaching our goal of $10,000 in this campaign will enable to us to produce more episodes, and take us ever closer to the finish line!

Our “Rewards” package includes a unique assortment of Outermost House and Cape Cod items that you won’t find anywhere else -- books and other media, along with photography and artwork -- will be among the items offered for various levels of contributions.

Your donation can help us tell this untold story of not just an influence for the Cape Cod National Seashore, but an under appreciated founding father of nature writing. This film will be offered to public television outlets, nonprofit organizations and National Parks, as well as schools, and serve as an educational tool for the nonprofit Beston Society.

Beston and his house are gone now, but his words echo still in the wilds of Cape Cod’s Outer Beach. The Outermost House is considered to be one of the seminal works of today's environmental movements. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing.

Please visit www.outermosthousemovie.com, follow the link to the Kickstarter page, and help us on the way to producing this film. Thank you!

Here’s what they’re saying about Don Wilding and “Henry Beston’s Cape Cod” — the book, the lecture, and the film!

“(Don Wilding) found (a like-minded soul) in author Nan Turner Waldron, the author of the book, Journey to Outermost House. Waldron stayed at the Outermost House every year between 1961 and 1977, and just before she died, she gave her huge slide collection and research notes to Wilding. It was a legacy he took seriously.” -- Laurie Higgins, The Cape Codder, Oct. 18, 2013

“Don Wilding … is not only a fine writer, but also knows a lot about Cape Cod history as founder of the Henry Beston Society.” — Provincetown Magazine, 2013

"I want to say how much I enjoyed (Henry Beston’s Cape Cod). I learned more about Beston, about the house, and about the relationship between his life and the National Seashore. I am grateful for the time you and others take particularly in educating young people (as well as adults) on the importance of paying attention to our physical world, of noticing what is happening, a process, which, I think, over time, is fruitful in wisdom." -- Angelyn Dries, Professor Emerita, Saint Louis University

"I have read (Henry Beston's Cape Cod) with special interest and (Don has) captured the man, his tremendous talent, and the mighty influence he has had not only on Cape Cod but all nature writing as well." -- John Neff, family friend of Henry Beston

“I extend to (Don Wilding) our gratitude for (his) expertise in subject and presentation. Having quality speakers and topics are the keys to any lasting program. (He has) added to that tradition.” — Robert McCormack, Cape Cod National Seashore, 2011

“(Don Wilding’s) heart and writing pad are firmly entrenched in the dunes of the Outer Cape.” — The Cape Cod Voice, 2001

“Reading this informative book (Henry Beston’s Cape Cod) by Don Wilding, Beston advocate par excellence, is a reminder that Henry Beston was a remarkable man and influential beyond his own expectations. Mr. Wilding is due a lot of praise for obtaining comments and recollections of Beston by a number of individuals mostly on the Cape whose impressions would have been lost if the author’s energy and zeal hadn’t been harnessed to Beston’s star.” – The Barnstable Patriot, Barnstable, Mass., 2003

"I want to thank Don Wilding for coming to Tahanto to share his presentation on Henry Beston's Cape Cod. Our students were able to learn so much more about one of America's greatest writers and naturalists than they could have by just reading the book. I was particularly touched and motivated by the portions of the presentation that illuminated Beston's compassion towards his fellow man. If any of you get the chance to meet Don, or read his book, or see his presentation, I highly recommend you do.”  - Peter Doherty, English Department Chair, Tahanto Regional High School, Boylston, Mass.

"The preview of the Beston documentary that you are working on really sparked the students' interest. How wonderful to see the (11th grade Honors English) students so excited about Beston and what he represents to Cape Cod and naturalists and environmentalists everywhere." — Elaine Aschetinno, English Department, Chatham High School, Chatham, Mass.

“I left marveling at how much Beston's book has both shaped and expressed my experience of the Cape these more-than-forty summers I've been coming here. After your contextualization, the images and quotations in the pre-production video became a meditation on this awesome natural place and our place in it. I left feeling like I'd been to church -- something I sometimes miss as a preacher myself!”  - Jack Lohr, attended screening at Cape Cod National Seashore, 2011

"Thank you so much for taking the time to share your deep knowledge of The Outermost House with our (coastal ecology) class. Our walk with you added another layer of understanding to the students' reading of Beston, and underscored the dynamic nature of life on the Great Beach. I can't wait for the film!”  - Brett Amy Thelen, Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, N.H.

"(Henry) Beston, traumatized by the mechanized destruction of World War I, knew and ultimately rejected (the mechanized world). (Nan Turner) Waldron understood. Now Wilding does." -- James Merolla, The Sun Chronicle, Attleboro, Mass.

Risks and challenges

While this film has drawn interest from WGBH in Boston, there is still significant work to be done to secure a firm commitment for distribution. A successful Kickstarter campaign will enable us to produce several more episodes to use as fundraising tools and to draw interest from media outlets.
