I'm a flag maker. I take large panels of white silk and dye them using blacklight-reactive dyes. Then I add weights along two edges, causing them to unfurl in the air when spun. Some use this as a form of dance, entertainment, meditation, exercise, and just plain fun. Anyone can spin flags after learning a few simple moves.
I'd like to bring this art form to High School Color Guard and Winter Guard students, who already have the skills to spin and enjoy them. I would attend competitions as a vendor, selling flags and related accessories such as hula hoops, bags and hats. I want to inspire these students and show them that the joy from having these skills can carry over into adulthood. Perhaps administrators will be interested in featuring them in future shows.
Winter Guard International reports more than 36,000 participants at the regional level. I would begin by focusing on this level, at competitions all over Southern California.
I'm only asking for $1,500, the minimum needed to cover business startup and vendor's fees. However, I will gladly accept more! I will put it toward more inventory and travel expenses.
Thank you! Even if you can't contribute, please consider forwarding this on to someone that might be looking for ways to pay it forward.
