About

PRESERVING THE ARTS: A DOCUMENTARY

Tellurian Media will produce a documentary focused on the importance of the arts through the lens of a Pakistani-American artist, Saira Malik Rahman. Saira is a physician, wife, mother and artist based in the Midwest. Our documentary will explore the important role of the arts on a personal, societal and national level and will demonstrate how art can be used as a multi-faceted mirror – a mirror that can be held to oneself, society, faith, culture, heritage, or politics. Art can tell a story and help us make sense of our world by broadening and enrichening our experience and understanding.

Through art, we engage in discourse – we seek to tell a story, challenge ideas, or change that which is around us as we strive to improve our world. For Saira, art is a tool used to challenge the status quo and affect social change, a conduit for communication and expression in trying times, a means of healing, and from her perspective as a pediatrician and mother, an integral part of childhood development. Saira’s art is also a reflection of her faith and heritage; by exploring this, our documentary will also share a portrait of a Muslim-American very different from the perspective shown in the media all too often.

Demonstrating the power of art and creativity is even more critical in today's political climate. The current White House administration took the extraordinary step of officially proposing the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The arts are proven to have a positive impact on society, from our development as children into citizens entrusted with leaving the world a more inclusive place for future generations. The arts should be supported, nurtured and celebrated; we must stand up for the institutions, movements and individual artists that fuel our nation’s cultural engine.

About the Artist:

A description of Saira’s artwork is included below. Her work may also be found here: http://www.sairamalikrahman.com/

“Saira creates by layering, piecing together, breaking apart, molding, peeling away and allowing the image to reveal itself in the process. Her work is never pre-destined to be a certain way and she enjoys the challenge of uniting seemingly incompatible parts to form a harmonious whole. Her eastern heritage has been a strong influence; she draws inspiration from hand-loomed textiles, traditional costumes, music and poetry. She is drawn to bold color that evokes flavor and emotion and uses a palette reminiscent of aromatic spices like cayenne, the sweetness of mango, the tartness of pomegranate, and the richness of gemstones like emerald and lapis lazuli. As a painter and a physician, she sees the worlds of medicine and art as inseparable. Painting allows Saira the chance the explore the unanswerable questions encountered in medicine. These questions on the human condition, suffering, healing, hope, life, death and our responsibility to each other have been raw material for much of her work. Her most recent pieces have been statements on social injustices and our roles as human beings and citizens. Saira has been painting all her life under the guidance of her mother, also a visual artist. She received her formal art training at University of Chicago with dual concentrations in the Visual Arts and the Biological Sciences. She later graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.”

Film Schedule & Funding:

Schedule: The film is currently in pre-production. Shooting is scheduled to take place during the first half of October 2017. Donated funds will go towards the following costs: audio equipment (lavalier microphones), video equipment (field monitor), post-production work (audio licensing, etc.), film festival submissions and travel. Post production work will begin in late October and continue till film completion, which at this time is anticipated to be summer of 2018.

Thank you!

Thank you for your donations! We believe our documentary shares an important message and should be shared with a wide audience, and this is only made possible by donors like you. We are tremendously grateful for your support!

Risks and challenges

Given that the director and the artist live in separate locations, the distance is a risk. Mitigating this risk will require adequate planning and forethought to ensure all shooting is completed according to the production schedule (early October 2017, when Usmaan and Saira will be in the same location). Both Usmaan and Saira have been working together diligently over the last several months to ensure filming is completed on time.
