What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Kookaburra Privacy

A voice activated device that can turn off Siri, Alexa and Google from listening in (and other appliances).

This is a "for fun" project I'm doing to help people retain their privacy at home. It's going to be open sourced when the product is complete and all the kooki's have been delivered.

Technical Specification

The device or "kooki", connects directly to your power socket. You can then plug your home automation device into the kooki. The kooki uses software for voice activation, and when you say "privacy", it shuts down the power to your home automation device (the integrated circuit controls a relay that turns on/off the input power to your home automation device). The light on the kooki visibly show whether the power has been cut off or not. It's possible to cluster the cluster kooki's together in a network mesh. They are not and cannot be connected to the internet - thus guaranteeing you your privacy.

Risks and challenges

The technology isn't so hard to make (esp. for an electrical engineer like myself) and has been around for a long time, so the major risk is supply and cost of materials and delivery.

I have contacts in a number of places in Taiwan and China who can provide cheaper quotes, but have been conservative enough to estimate production here in San Francisco, CA. I believe there will be no trouble delivering at the price and on time as we expect. Depending on the numbers we get, it'll determine where we get the devices from, and how quickly we get them, but I'm counting on at least a few months turn around time. I've budgeted for 20% more just in case.
