What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Take a break from the mundane style of cardboard coffee sleeves with a beautiful, laser cut wood sleeve. These are made in small quantities by us in our shop in Olympia. We're in coffee country and go through a lot of coffee cups.  These sleeves are reusable, saving cardboard.  The spring and surface finish of the wood keep the sleeve on the cup better, so it's there when you need. They feel great in your hand.

The tabs are styled as coffee beans, to let everyone know you're really into coffee. They are designed to allow you to easily open and close the sleeve.

I've been experimenting with kerf bending plywood and decided to try making a cup sleeve. I'd seen a simple one in a photo, but wanted something with a better design. By incorporating patterns and designing the coffee bean connector tabs, I've made it into something unique for your morning cup.

We'll make in natural and dark stained versions, in the two patterns shown below. The sleeves will be finished with our hand mixed and hand applied oil and beeswax finish.

Risks and challenges

Through many design iterations and much testing, the versions we're offering are worked out. Production will be similar to other items we make.

Packaging for shipping will need to be finalized.
