Past production reviews include: ‘**** ‘Three Weeks, and ‘The Big 11 of 2011’ The Forum.
Your dollars will fund social advocacy and education in three vital ways. . .
Awakening Understanding SPRING AWAKENING is a tragedy and the themes and issues that the main characters deal with in SPRING AWAKENING produce tragic consequences still today. However, through artful exploration we have the power to be catalysts for change. By bravely and honestly discussing the issues in SPRING AWAKENING, audience members can personally prevent the tragedies that befall the characters in Spring Awakening. The famous playwright, Bertolt Brecht, once said of theater that, “The point is not to leave the spectator purged by a catharsis but to leave him a changed man (or woman), to sow within him the seeds of changes which must be completed outside the theater”. We embrace these seeds of change.
Awakening Awareness For youth between the ages of 10-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death and results in more than 4,400 deaths each year in the US. Act Up Theatre will produce and distribute 1,000 “Awakening Awareness” magnets which spell out the warning signs of depression and suicide. These magnets will be distributed to audience members, parents, children, teachers, and community partners. The mission of Act Up Theatre can be realized when we use the arts for public good and reach out with compassion and understanding to those who, like the characters in Spring Awakening, are facing their darkest hours.
Awakening Conversation According to studies conducted by the the Center for Disease Control, when parents to talk to their children about sexuality, the children are more likely to delay intercourse, have fewer partners, and use contraception. To that end, Act Up Theatre will be partnering with area mental health professionals to produce production talk backs which “awaken” the conversation between parents and their children about issues of sexuality.
