About

The incredible true story of the Chosin Reservoir campaign- thoroughly researched and historically accurate.

Written, drawn and animated by an infantry veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who served in both the Marines and the US Army.

The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to expand a 50-page comic book into a 130-page graphic novel.

The pages you see here were commissioned by the Department of Defense a year ago. The DoD did not distribute the book as promised to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War (June 25th of this year). Two months too late, they released the raw print files in an effectively unreadable manner on a link which almost no one can find. No promotion. Nothing. They released the copyright, putting the onus of printing and distributing the book on the public whose tax dollars they wasted.

They fumbled the ball. I'm picking it up and running with it.

The existing 50 pages cover the experiences of Marine Corps infantry and Naval aviators at Chosin. The 80 new pages will cover the plight of the US Army on the East side of the Chosin Reservoir as well as telling the story of the Korean refugees who escaped the Communists.

"Hey wait- wasn't there already a Chosin graphic novel/animation project?"

I co-wrote the graphic novels CHOSIN- HOLD THE LINE and CHOSIN- TO THE SEA, which have been completed and will be distributed by Veterans Inc. While CHOSIN-HOLD THE LINE focused on a single company of Marines defending a crucial pass, THE FROZEN CHOSIN broadens the scope to include the entire massive battle- Marines, soldiers, sailors, and refugees. Each fighting for their lives in the most inhospitable environment on Earth.

My ultimate goal is to get a copy of this graphic novel in every library in the country. The heroics of the men who fought at Chosin are something that all Americans should be proud of. Sadly- few Americans have ever even heard of Chosin. I aim to change that.

Graphic novels have exploded in popularity at libraries. In many libraries, the graphic novel section is the most popular section. This is a great way to catch the eye of people who wouldn't normally read a book about the Korean War.

To further appeal to youth audiences, I have begun production on a 3D animated short about Chosin titled "Hellfire Valley." 3D animation has universal appeal and if I can draw people in with 3D animation and that gets them to read the graphic novel and then find about more about Chosin- then my efforts will be a success.

The money from this campaign will be used to pay for a colorist, cover artist, pre-press, printing, distribution, taxes and related business expenses. If the project does very well, the additional funds will be used to finish the 3D animated short and to help with the effort to get the book into libraries.

I will finish drawing the graphic novel in December. It should take about two more months for it to be colored, lettered, and prepped. Printing and mailing takes about a month.

For the animated short, the 3D assets (character models, weapons, vehicles, sets) have all been either built by me or bought online. Animation is already in full production.

Risks and challenges

The main risk when using digital media is corruption of files, but I mitigate that danger by saving multiple iterations of files which means that the risk factor is low.
