UPDATES - OTOMO PLEDGE LEVEL
We've added two new backer levels, one is for anyone who hasn't got an Unrustable Bastard Bike and Rider transforming action figure set, a new basic pack with just 1 head for Burley and minimal weapons at a reduced rate for people who back this Kickstarter. You have to commit to all six issues to get this.
The second level is for people who are looking for our incredibly limited Akira homage; Otomo!
There are only 500 of these worldwide and we've taken 30 from our TFNation and TFCon USA allocation to add this to our Kickstarter. You need to commit to all 6 issues and variants (18 issues total) at this pledge level.
Geoff Senior issue #1 Variant Transformers UK #113 Homage A3 Art Print
We're making this available as a convention style art-print on quality paper stock. Just add $25 to any PHYSICAL pledge ($20 for the print, $5 for shipping) and you can have this awesome art to add to your collection.
(Final print will be clean, won't include issue number, KS logo or URL)
All Physical Rewards also include digital copies of the respective comics! If you've paid for later delivery, where you don't get any issue until they're finished, you will receive the digital copies as each issue is ready.
NOW UNLOCKED - ALL FIVE STRETCH GOALS
After talking with the team about the Kickstarter and where we're at after the first week, we've decided to go ahead and unlock ALL SIX ISSUES, that's right, this WILL be a 6 issue series, if we reach our target of $8,000. We're determined to make this work.
From Mayhem Mekanics (the people behind the first ever successfully crowd-sourced Transforming robot toy - The Unrustables), comes The Unrustables - The Comic Book series!
Chronicling the adventures of the Unrustable Bastards biker gang on their home planet of Tombstone, as they feud with rival gangs The Spector Rogues and the Yamazuki and try to stay one step ahead of the Enforcers, the almost militant wing of the corrupt Oligarchy, who rule the galaxy and control everything. Everything except the outer colonies.
Volume One of The Unrustables comic series is scheduled to be a 6 issue series, with each one featuring an Incentive Unrustable Bastards branded variant cover featuring artwork from comic legend Geoff Senior (Transformers, Death's Head, Dragons Claw).
This Kickstarter is for issue #1, but unlocks issues 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 at various points through the campaign in order to fund the entire 6 issue series.
Written by Sid Beckett (sometimes known as C Z Hazard; author of Generic Vampire Novel and successful Kickstarter novel Not In The Eye, and Ceno Kibble; 3rd Party transforming robot Creative Consultant and author of well over 100 3rd party toy biographies), with art from Bryan Sevilla (artist on many 3rd party comics) and colouring by Nate Hammond, this series recreates the smash-mouth 1980s retro sensibilities of comics such as Transformers UK, or 2000AD, but with modern story-telling conceits and a multiple narrative thread, all building together and telling a cohesive story with a clear-cut and pre-outlined beginning, middle and end.
Look out for a video to be added in the first week of the project with page artwork and Sid discussing the storyline. The full pitch can be read below.
Based on the hugely successful independent toyline The Unrustables created by Nick Calloway (better known to 3rd Party Transformers collectors as the prolific yet schizophrenic Cassy Sark, Mel Warner and Sal Dillinger), this comic aims to tell the story of the wider Robo Dominion Saga universe, whilst expanding the toyline of the Unrustables by introducing fans and collectors to new gangs such as the Yamazuki, Enforcers, Regulators and many more, ahead of their eventual toy releases.
By backing you are making this comic series come to life, and ensure you get them first, either as digital material or as physical comics. This campaign will hopefully cover not just the first issue, but hopefully all six issues if we meet all our stretch goals!
The money raised will be used to pay the creative team for their artwork and coloring, and to pay for production and shipping of the finished product. Maybe the writer will get something too... maybe.
This Kickstarter is for the funding of Issue #1 and the backer reward levels reflect this, and we very much hope to unlock all 6 issues of volume 1 during this campaign, however if you want to back heavy and take a gamble on us, you CAN pledge for all 6 issues right now and we will do our best to fulfill this obligation regardless of the final total (providing we hit our initial target of $10k).
Each issue will feature 3 covers as follows. The Standard "The Unrustables" cover by Bryan Sevilla, an Incentive Variant by Geoff Senior or TBA, Kickstarter exclusive cover by TBA
As each issue unlocks as a stretch goal is reached, we will do our best to update you with the artist's name and a WIP of each variant, depending on the schedules of our friendly freelancers. The Backer Reward levels will also be adjusted too as each Stretch Goal is (hopefully) reached.
WILL THIS BE AVAILABLE FROM COMIC SHOPS?
Full disclosure; We hope so!
We're looking for a publisher, but we've decided to self publish the first 6 issues ourselves, hopefully the ongoing series and collection of Volume 1 can find a home with a publisher, and we may well end up listed in Previews at some point making them available to the Direct Market through Diamond Comics, but the Incentive covers will be 1:10 if we make it to Previews and the Kickstarter covers will not be available at mass retail, so it does you well to back us now!
STRETCH GOALS - UPDATE, ALL UNLOCKED!!
Many thanks to the kind folks at Captured Prey for partnering with us and helping to bring this to life!
In a distant future, Man and Machine will war for survival. Humanity loses. Organic life has been purged from every planet. Machines have colonised everywhere and try to forge their own destiny. On the lawless outer colonies, Biker Gangs rule.
After evolving and growing for millions of years, these machines have long since solved all energy problems due to a break-through in fusion technology, but the struggle for survival now comes in the form of parts and components. A vast Oligarchy controls the central planets, including the flow of all information and all technology. For millenia the pattern has been repeated; find a new planet, extract its materials, price it's natural habitants out of the market until they move off-world – destroying and destabilizing economies as they go - and continue until all resources are stripped bare.
The hand of this mighty Empire stretch ever outwards in the search for more raw materials, to the very edges of the galaxy and back, even to planets like Tombstone on the outer rim; a dirty back-water planet with little going for it. A minor footnote in history were it not the birthplace of the founding chapter of the Unrustable Bastards.
Out story follows two main characters.
Burley is the leader of these Unrustable Bastards, the most infamous of the three biker gangs on the planet Tombstone and the only one truly deserving of the term “outlaws”. Burley is trying to hold the outlaw gang together after a recent change in leadership which tore the gang in half and created the Spector Rogues; they fight for survival against rival biker gangs and the Enforcers, corrupt law officials who do the bidding of the Oligarchy. This situation is complicated by the return of Iride, a former Prospect who has returned to the gang requesting membership, but is there a place for a new Prospect on the team? Just how far will Burley go to protect the status quo and his leadership?
Iride swore he'd leave the dead planet of Tombstone and the motorcycle gang he grew up with, now years later he has returned to find the gang has gone through some changes. With a new leader, a rival Prospect, the gang fractured by a new outlaw gang - The Spector Rogues - made up of former team members competing for turf and contracts, can Iride find a place within his old team? What will he do with the secret only he knows; that one of the gang is a traitor?
Attacked on all sides by their rivals Spector Rogues, a street-gang called the Yamazuki, and the Enforcers. Can the gang survive or will they tear themselves apart? And if they do, how long until the Oligarch's influence reaches to their backwater planet and disrupts their outlaw way of life?
It's Sons of Anarchy meets Scalped by way of Transformers. The Unrustables is a new 6-issue miniseries, the first of an ongoing storyline set in a brand new universe with a whole new cast of robotic characters who bond with their vehicles to become awesome Mech Machines. Based on the first ever succesful Kickstarter campaign for a transforming toyline, brought to you by Mayhem Mekanics.
Risks and challenges
This is a much smaller project than our successful $84k toy production Kickstarter, so we've proven we can manage a complex Kickstarter and come through with all our promises and no major hiccups.
The entire six issue series is outlined, with several issues fully scripted and the first issue more or less fully drawn in full. We're printing and self-publishing ourselves, and have already costed out all the production costs. As with any project things can go wrong and we'll adjust and evolve as and when things happen, but we're very confident in our ability to deliver on this project as promised.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
