Year Four cover concept (not final).
So why are we here?
This is the Cura Te Ipsum Year Four Kickstarter, a drive to fund the printing of the fourth full year trade of Cura Te Ipsum, an ongoing digital comic by Neal Bailey (writer, letterer) and Dexter Wee (artist) with nearly seven hundred pages posted to date.
What is Cura Te Ipsum?
Cura Te Ipsum tells the story of Charlie Everett, a guidance counselor who decides to kill himself, only to be stopped at the last second by a Charlie from a similar world in another dimension.
In most worlds, Charlie dies, but in some, Charlies unite across time and space to form a team calling themselves Cura Te Ipsum (Latin for "Physician, Heal Thyself!") who try to stop other Charlies from alternate dimensions from ending their own lives. They are pursued by the Dark Everett, a version of Charlie who believes they all must die, across space and time, in every universe.
What people have been saying:
Critically Cura has been fortunate enough to have people speak for it at I09, Newsarama, Comics Alliance, Four Colors and the Truth, and our personal favorite, a very flattering review from Greg Rucka.
Cura Te Ipsum has consistently updated for free every week since 2010, and we're not stopping until we finish our five year plan, barring death or apocalypse. The script's in the can.
The best argument we can give for if it's your thing, however, is to actually have you read the story so far, which you can start doing here, for FREE. Woot!
What we’re trying to do…
This penultimate trade covers a lot of ground. We learn the final, bleak events in the origin of the Dark Everett. The conflict between Charlie Prime, Charlene, and the Multifarious Charlie is resolved. Several characters meet their demise, in both noble and ignoble fashion. Lakbay and her team make their astounding debut. Finally, Charlie and the Dark Everett have a fateful confrontation that changes the world of Cura forever...
Like the preceding trades, Year Four will collect an entire year of the ongoing story in a trade paperback. This paperback will feature:
- A glossy, full-color cover
- Matte black and white interiors
- 6.625X10.25 standard trade width and height, perfect bound
- Approximately 155-165 pages (may vary based on backmatter)
- Pages 518-673 of the ongoing story
As before, every physical order will also come with deluxe digital PDFs for all trades thusfar, which will feature complete thumbnails (the original versions of the pages before Dex draws them, with alternate angles, etc), the final art in high quality (blow it up and see all the details), and the entire original script with Neal’s commentary about the creation and thought process. The PDFs will also be updated, streamlined for size, and will reflect the second editions.
We have learned a lot from our previous two Kickstarters, and are applying that knowledge to make this Kickstarter better for you, our readers! Here are the major changes between this Kickstarter and the last two:
1) A NEW PRINTER
We have found a new printer for our softcovers who will make our books at a lower price without having to hit bulk breaks, which is a huge load off our minds in terms of balancing the budget. Our hardcovers will still be printed with our older printer, on glossy stock, and the softcovers will move to matte. This lowers our goal from last year's by a full two thousand dollars!
2) SECOND EDITIONS
Year One, Year Two, and Year Three softcover trades will also be updated with slightly tweaked second editions, matching the paper of Year Four, and with minor gutter corrections. We'll also be getting our first ISBN numbers, so the book can go in most stores! For more information on these new edtions, please see the pre-Kickstarter posts on the main site, or feel free to submit any additional questions via a message!
Before this Kickstarter, we have been unable to get Dex's signature on any books outside of his sketches. For this Kickstarter, we have found a way to print bookplates at a reasonable rate, and so in addition to personalized thank you messages from Neal, each book will bear a sticker bookplate signed by both Neal and Dex! Check back here in the coming weeks for our image (we think you'll dig our concept, a lot).
Year Four Hardback cover concept (colors by Splash Colors)
We're bringing back the popular limited edition hardcovers from the previous two Kickstarters. They are once more limited to fifty, and each will include a hand drawn sketch from Dex and a personal inscription from Neal. If you bought a limited edition hardcover in Year Two and Year Three, we will match your number. Any potential conflicts in numbering matching will be resolved first come, first served. Last year there were no issues, and we don't anticipate any this year.
Where will my pledge go?
There are many costs associated with printing a trade. Outside of the huge investment of time and energy, there are the basic costs to get this thing going feasibly:
- $500 for 100 copies of Year Four in softcover
- $750 sketches, bookplate design, print layouts and covers from Dex
- $750 for 50 copies of each previous softcover
- $350 print setup fees
- $1175 shipping (envelopes, postage, books to us, books to you)
- $725 for 50 hardcovers
- $100 Bookplates
- $150 Anticipated breakage, lost copies in the post, and damaged copies based on previous Kickstarters
In addition, Kickstarter demands 5% in fees, and the credit card companies charge up to 5% for transactions. That's an additional ten percent, or $450, which puts the final total at $4,950.
There's always a little wiggle, so I'm going to make this a nice round $5,000. This is lower than last year's Kickstarter by two thousand dollars, thanks to the new printer!
If we are fortunate enough to manage more, we will endeavor to please you with some awesome stretch goals! Stay tuned.
Anything we make above and beyond our goal or stretches will go toward paying Dexter for his work on the ongoing comic and defraying the costs accumulated in creating and maintaining the comic, which are rather significant.
Our campaign needs YOU!
The only reason we were successful the last two times was because all of you fine people were spreading the word on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and even a few podcasts! If we’re to succeed, we will only succeed with your help. We will be telling people about this, of course, but if we can add all of your voices to ours, there’s a much, much better chance of success.
THANK YOU ALL!
-Neal and Dex
Risks and challenges
Dexter and I have now put together nine trades in our time working together. We know the ins and outs and difficulties of the process. There are very few risks in terms of product being produced effectively and on time. There are always unforeseen circumstances, but we work through them actively and communicate when they happen. You can feel free to browse updates on the last Kickstarter to see that this is true.
We have also taken the step of making our anticipated arrival date one month later than we plan on delivery, just in case.
Our best reassurance is our past performance. Feel free to ask anyone who has been a part of previous print incarnations of this comic. We consider it a gross personal failure if anyone leaves this process dissatisfied, and stand by our work. All we need, really, is your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
