That's right, a sing-along Kickstarter campaign! You and us, together, right here & now. Try it -- only 30 seconds.
My name is Ljova, and I'm a New York-based composer & performer. Several years ago, I founded an ensemble -- Ljova and the Kontraband -- to explore new original music that mixes everything we're exposed to, musically and culturally, and boils it into one tasty stew. It's rollicking fun, intimate, dark, and sweet.
The band features Inna Barmash singing, Patrick Farrell on accordion, Mathias Kunzli on percussion & Mike Savino on bass -- and me, playing viola and fadolín, a 6-stringed fiddle.
We've released one album so far, and have been privileged to collaborate with a number of amazing musicians, dancers / choreographers & filmmakers.
Now, we're getting ready to release our second album -- one that I'm incredibly excited to share with you. I'm so thrilled with how it came out, and how good everyone sounds playing & singing. We recorded it over several long days at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn with Aaron Nevezie, and mixed at The Audio Bunker on the Lower East Side, with Shahzad Ismaily. We're mastering next week with Steve Berson, and working on the cover art.
This record has almost everything -- it has songs dedicated to our children, a song with a text by my grandfather, a song I wrote in the Pacific Northwest, and a song about a tiny street in Vienna. There's also a song about our number one fan, Sam.
It's also a very exciting time for the Kontraband because this 26th of October, we'll be making our European debut at the WOMEX. WOMEX is the most important showcase for world-music, and we're honored to have been selected in a huge pool of 850 applicants, to bring our sound to Europe, and to meet so many new people, arts presenters and musicians from all over the world. We're also performing two public shows in London on the 23rd of October, and in Pembrokeshire on the 24th - stay tuned for details.
Making records is expensive -- worse yet, plane fares to England are bloody expensive. WOMEX is the singular most important conference for world music, and our best shot at further touring in Europe - however, they do not cover any of our costs on this trip.
And so, we are asking for your support in helping us complete this record. The money we're raising will go towards covering airfare, hotel, instrument rentals, recording studio costs, mixing, mastering, design, duplication and paying musicians. Approximately 10% of the total will go to Kickstarter & Amazon, and some to the taxman.
We do not -- by choice -- have a record label, publicist, or a publisher. We release everything directly to our fans. By supporting this campaign, you not only help us complete the album and get to England, but also help lay the groundwork for future touring projects, collaborations, and activities for the whole family.
This is an all or nothing campaign -- if we don't reach our goal, we get nothing, and none of this happens.
Thank you so much for your support!
P.S. Here's a music video of "Mnemosyne", the title song of our debut album --
Risks and challenges
This project is very close to completion - all of the tracks are mixed, and a mastering session has been scheduled. We've picked the cover art (just wait!) and are working on the design. We do not anticipate any problems with duplication..Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
