idBrooklyn is a large-scale design project aimed at creating the graphic identity of Brooklyn through your participation.
Why would a borough need a graphic identity?
The answer is simple: because every city has a unique identity that should be celebrated. An urban identity becomes so convoluted over the hundreds of years of its construction that we often forget what sets it apart from other metropolises. This project is both a look back to the roots of Brooklyn, and also a step forward in connecting and commending the great diversity within the borough.
idBrooklyn is about making something that people from all walks of life can take pride in. We encourage participation and community in the process, whether it's between the multi-ethnic neighborhoods or amongst an international community of people that believe in design for the greater good.
We create simple and attractive icons that visually explain the unique cultural facets of Brooklyn. We want the graphic identity to be something enjoyed by all, not an abstract logo that says nothing and that nobody can relate with.
In recent years Brooklyn's culture has received national and international attention due to its booming arts and maker-cultures combined with its historical significance in the United States.
As Brooklynites and Brooklyn-lovers, we want tap into the borough´s pulse and make it the world's first community branded by participatory design. We, a group of five artists and designers, have designed a four-part project that allows Brooklynites and people from around the world to contribute to the cultural identity of this borough.
We designers and professors will host hands-on workshops with real people from different age groups and all walks of life with the objective of singling out the icons that best represent Brooklyn's identity.
2. Mobile App and Website
We've designed the beginning stages of a mobile app and website that will be a virtual space for local and international participants to contribute to what Brooklyn is to them. Become a storyteller and give our design team food for thought.
3. Artist Involvement
After we have loads of visual and written material for what Brooklyn is to each and every one of you, we will call for local artists, designers and writers to express their vision as it relates to the Brooklyn icons, and to the borough's identity at large.
An actual exhibit at a museum or gallery space that will showcase the results of the workshops, along with curated works from the participating local artists and the icons themselves, as streamlined by us from the participants’ raw input. The show (we're secretly hoping for the Brooklyn Museum) will include specific works of art from the museum’s collection, or from other institutions, deemed by the curators to personify Brooklyn’s identity.
Why Brooklyn? Why Now?
Brooklyn is one of the most important culture creators in the US. We want to contribute to this phenomenon by designing icons that visualize that coveted “Brooklynness.” Our hopes are that these icons will facilitate a global conversation about these symbols.
What excites us the most is that the final exhibition itself is merely a beginning, the start of a conversation. We envision the project as an interactive work-in-progress as diverse as the people who take part in it. And perhaps when it reaches its critical mass and takes on a life of its own, we can then step back and let its scope suggest an answer to the elusive question,“What does Brooklyn mean?”
What people say about idBrooklyn
"The value that idBrooklyn offers the city is the opportunity for community members to collaborate with designers, in an online platform. The community input is key to creating a city's graphic identity, and it seems that every city should have such a resource." —GOOD, Alessandra Rizzotti
"IdBrooklyn's approach to brand the borough represents the spirit of the city on its own. The identity will be created by people, the same way Brooklynites build their own gardens or markets: through participatory design. Open to Brooklyn lovers from all over the world, an online platform will allow everybody to share their vision of what Brooklyn means to them. This experiment on cultural branding can become a standard for other communities all around the world." —Oscar Ramos Orozco, Head Curator, Behance
