At its essence, The Carniverse is an "open model" campaign driven skirmish system. It is designed to be played using 28mm miniatures on a 3' x 3' gaming surface. Each player recruits a team of survivors, and then those teams face off within several different scenarios to gather resources (which are used to upgrade their bases, and recruit new survivors), and to earn experience (which is used to level up survivors, giving them new abilities and skills), all in the hopes of gathering enough Intel to buy their way into a mysterious military compound called Eden.
The Carniverse has no branded models. It is a rule set that is intended to be played by either using the models and terrain people already have in their collections, or with whatever toys, models, or representative tokens they wish to use in order to act as their survivors and play area. We created the game in this fashion so that people could get a new set of rules to enjoy at minimal cost. Like you, we too are conscious of how we spend our hobby dollar, and it's our intention for the Carniverse to not be a strain on that for anyone.
***Throughout this campaign page we have included photographs taken during our own play-testing and development using models sourced from other vendors, re-purposed toys, and items made from scratch. The idea is for you to create your own world to play in. We included these pictures to show you what our vision was during the creation of this game and to aid you in finding yours, whatever that may be.***
The Carniverse was developed and play-tested primarily using 28mm miniatures as they seem to be the most common among current war-games, and manufacturers. Should you wish to play in a different scale, you can, some quick adjustments to measurements on your part will allow you to do that without breaking the game system. As long as everything is kept consistent, the game will not care what scale you choose to play in.
Each game you play of The Carniverse (regardless of scenario) is played out using the same structure and rules. The game turns are broken up into 5 separate phases, which repeat turn after turn until either the specific scenario objectives have been met, your team is out of action, or one team breaks morale and abandons the fight leaving the other as the victor. The phases themselves are described in brief detail below:
At the completion of each scenario, players roll for any injuries to their characters that were removed from play, gain experience and level up characters through increasing their base attributes (of which there are 10) or learning new skills, maintain and expand their base, roll for any resources they managed to get off the battlefield, assign jobs to uninjured characters, swap gear, and maybe even recruit new members to their team.
In the Carniverse game system, the things that happen between battles are as important as the conflicts themselves. This is the story of your survivors, and of how they continue to exist in such a savage new world.
Below are pictures of The Carniverse rule book. These are from a editing proof we had created prior to this Kickstarter, and will be extremely close to the final product received by backers. The rule book checks in at 132 black & white printed interior pages, and will be a standard printing size of 8.5" x 11"
Final editing of the rule book is nearing completion, and it will be ready to hit the printers as soon as backer surveys are finished following the campaign.
*30 second flip through of one of the editing copies
Pictured below are the dice that will be shipping out with each physical copy of the Carniverse rule book. Each rule book will ship with 2 of these red/white D6's. The special edition set of dice shipping with the hardcover version will be of the same size, style, and design, but will be a different set of colours (which is still being decided upon with the manufacturer). It is important to note the hardcover copies will still receive 2 of the red/white dice that ship with the softcover versions.
We produced a number of these dice prior to launch to ensure their quality, and have loved the feel of them and how they've held up to constant play with zero wear. You can see them in action throughout the six batreps linked further below.
We've taken a two-pronged approach to the development of the Carniverse rule book, both decisions were made at the outset of the project for a couple of reasons. They mainly centre around the production of the final book, and the layout of its interior.
Having a long standing love for the RPG and gaming books of our youth that were all printed in black & white, we felt that going back to this not only added to the feel we were trying to create, but would also have the added benefit of dramatically reducing the production costs of the finished book.
You may also notice that we've used art you might have seen elsewhere. Commissioning enough art to fill a book this size is very costly, especially for a small independent studio. By purchasing and using stock artwork we are able to use the talents of very good artists for a fraction of the cost.
Being a fledgling game studio unable to absorb high production costs, these things were very appealing to us. And after running the numbers and seeing how much we could cut off the end price of the book for backers, it was a simple decision. We looked at new art and colour and saw a potential price tag of $50+ for a softcover book, and decided it just wasn't worth it.
The goal of this project (even from its first days of inception) was to offer a new rule set at a budget friendly cost. We hope this will not be a detriment to anyone, as we feel the game itself far exceeds its current price point.
Adam and Jay of Encounter Wargaming were kind enough to sit down with us and dive into The Carniverse rules through a campaign. We created a series of videos taking two teams of survivors through each of the six scenarios in the core book, each of which can be seen in the links below. They were also gracious enough to give us their honest opinions after each game regarding their time travelling the lands of this new world.
Jacob over at Must Contain Minis (MCM) has also just published a review of the game. We had an opportunity to put him through a hands on scenario at a local convention a couple months back. You can read the review by clicking either of the pictures below.
We know shipping costs can be a major hurdle for projects and backers. We looked into every option available, and ultimately we had to make some difficult decisions as shipping from Canada proves to be quite expensive. While the PDF version of the Carniverse is available to everyone worldwide, we are only able to ship physical copies to the following countries (listed below). This is largely due to shipping in low quantity, and costs associated with larger items like books going through the international mail system. Shipping outside of these countries was often more expensive than the books themselves, which we felt was unfair. We'll continue searching for cheaper shipping options following the campaign for those of you outside of the designated areas. Until then you have our deepest apologies, and we hope the PDF pledge level can tide you over.
***All shipping costs will be charged through Backerkit following the completion of the campaign. Costs listed below are APPROXIMATE and are for a single book w/dice***
Canada (Approx $12 CAD) - wherever you live in our great country get ready for adventure!
United States (Approx $15 CAD) - to our southern neighbours, we'll deliver the new world right to your door!
European Union *Excluding Romania, Bulgaria, & Cyprus* (Approx $22 CAD) - the Carniverse is ready to spread overseas! Get your tabletops ready for some dino carnage!
Australia (Approx $22 CAD) - buckle up, more deadly animals for the outback!
Switzerland (Approx $22 CAD) - Welcome to the Carniverse as a new shipping option!
New Zealand (Approx $22 CAD) - Welcome to the fold! Now grab a weapon, the Dino's are coming!
If you are local to the Hamilton, Ontario area there will be an option to pick up your book in person at one of the HTGS (Hamilton Tabletop Gaming Society) game nights. They happen the last Friday night of each month. This will be chosen after the campaign closing so there is nothing you need to do for now. Making this choice makes you responsible for receiving your book as there is only 1 day a month available for in-person pickup.
***All physical items requiring shipping will be bubble-wrapped and shipped inside of a cardboard book mailer to prevent any damage during transit (as pictured below)***
The Carniverse has been developed in English only, and there is currently no plan to have it translated to any other languages. Based upon the success of this Kickstarter, should multiple languages be in demand, we will look into the steps required to getting that done. For now we apologize to anyone whose needs this will not meet, and hope you check back with us in the future following the campaign for any multi-language updates.
This is an all or nothing campaign, so there are no stretch goals. This funding campaign is purely to pay for printing costs, along with the manufacturing costs of the dice, to recoup the expenses accrued to get the game to its current state (excluding any time cost actually spent developing the game), and get it released into the world. We felt that we could not add enough extra value to the book through stretch goals without having to increase our funding prices to cover those goals (should they be met) or by removing content to offer as goals. And so, we ultimately ended up choosing to do without them, keeping the cost as minimal as possible to our backers, and offering the full product complete, and up front.
Because we are so grateful to get this game out into the world, all backers at the PDF level or above will receive a free download link to Tales of Survival Vol. 1, the first mini PDF expansion for the Carniverse game world. Play-testing should be completed with it ready to go very close to the time backers begin receiving their physical copies of the Carniverse. Inside you will find the following additions to the core rule set;
- a new Leader
- 3 new Character Types
- 2 new Firearms
- 1 new Melee weapon
- 5 new Gear items
- 2 new Dinosaurs
- 4 new Scenarios
- alternate rules for Weather, Time of Day, Secret Caches, and Dinosaur AI
- Solo Play
The following bundles of items can be added on to ANY pledge level. Simply add the value of the add-on you want to your pledge level. These items will also be available during the pledge manager following the campaign should you wish to add them later.
eg. You want to back the Carniverse at the softcover backing level (Dilophosaurus) of $30, and wish to add a set of five additional Dino Dice ($6), simply add them together ($30+$6=$36) and put the added value of $36 in as your pledge amount.
**Any add-on items will increase shipping costs. There is the potential to see your shipping cost end up being near double the approximate values given in the shipping section above should you choose to add a large number of add-on items. We will work diligently to cut that increase down to as little as possible, absorb costs where we can, and will charge shipping on a case by case basis based upon the amount of weight being shipped in an effort to offer the best pricing to each backer that decides to add items**

A Message From the Creator
Thank you for taking the time to look through the Carniverse campaign page. I hope you found something that appeals to you within the words you've read, or the pictures you've seen. Perhaps the story of your own team of survivors and the world they find themselves in is beginning to take shape.
Should you choose to back the Carniverse at any level, I am truly thankful for your support, as it gets the game one step closer to being set loose upon the world. This is not possible without the support of each and every backer.
Even if you have decided that this is not for you, I am still very thankful for your time, as it is the most precious commodity any of us have to give. Maybe one day in the future you may yet find yourself travelling within the world of the Carniverse.
To each and all of you. May your game tables know nothing but mirth and merriment.
Risks and challenges
We are a new game studio, but we've done our homework. The risks involved with seeing this project through to completion after a successful campaign should be minimal. The book is already written, with all the artwork and layout already completed. It is currently very near 100% ready to go to the printers, with all shipping logistics worked through. With using a local printer, and logistics fulfillment, we aim to get books into the hands of backers as quickly as possible. Unforeseen delays are always a possibility, but we have added extra time to our delivery dates to accommodate for anything that may happen to try and surprise us. Our goal is to get you these books before the holidays, ahead of schedule, and we will do everything we can to make that happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
