Formal Inquiry: The Sonata Undressed features the work of composer/pianist Carrie Purcell, Violinist Rochelle Ngyen and Cellist Hana Marckova; poets Amy Schrader, Justin Rigamonti, and Alexis Vergalla; and visual artists Teresa Morani, Greg Plumis, Kate Protage and Angela Scott. Formal Inquiry's participating artists have been working within and against centuries-old structures, the sonnet and the sonata, to create innovative work in a variety of media. The event will include visual art that translates music to color, sonnet sequences exploring miscommunication in sonata form and the world premier of new chamber music for piano trio. Through intensive engagement with the structures of their disciplines' masterworks, the participating artists hope to attain a newfound freedom that emerges from these imposed constraints.
The money we're raising on Kickstarter will pay for our venue, which with tech night and three performances, costs $900. Anything over that will help pay for supplies--gels for the lights, gobo holders, program printing costs, poster and postcard printing costs, and dinner to feed the crew. Covering these costs allows us to make this art accessible with low prices (only $8 in advance!), and provide for the pay-what-you can performance on Sunday, June 12th.
Most humble thanks are due to Jon Peck of Cut Once Films (HD videos, Webpage design, advertising and more!) for creating the video for this project. Still shots of the artists are by Jason Williams. The music in the video was composed by Carrie Purcell, the visual art by the artists named above. Please see the Formal Inquiry website for more information on their work and links for purchasing.
