About

Great news! - We've reached more than 80% of our goal in under a week!  Let's keep it rolling!

Here's What People Are Saying About the PathSource Kickstarter:

"Today, PathSource is launching a Kickstarter to connect students and careers on mobile. PathSource is aimed at giving students direct access to information about professional opportunities that are available to them based on their skills, interests and background....Given the indecisive nature of U.S. college students (half change their majors 2-3 times) and high unemployment rates for 16-24 year olds, it’s no surprise that recent grads are looking for a solution."

Make It Simple. What Is This Project All About?

We want your help to create an app that will connect the dots between education, careers, lifestyle and budget for young Americans. We’re going to build a single tool that will enable young adults who have no idea what they want to do to be able to get to a point where they can find a career path that is a great fit for them. For the past couple of years our small team has built a killer web app and sold it to high schools and middle schools in San Francisco, Chicago and elsewhere across America. Our efficacy data shows that we’re changing lives. Now we’re turning to Kickstarter because we need your help to create a FREE mobile version of our service for young adults.

Get in the queue to be the first to get access at www.pathsource.com/app or just go to PathSource.com and click on the mobile app!

Does The World Really Need This?

YES!

Here’s why:

  • For many young people, it looks like the only road to success is through professional sports or music stardom.
  • In middle school and high school kids struggle to pay attention because we can’t connect the classroom with the real world.
  • In college students are asked to focus on a college major, yet they lack the context of workforce experience and rarely know what will be the logical choice to lead to a fulfilling job.
  •  More often than not young adults realize too late that they are studying the wrong field. After college some grasp that they spent years specializing in something that either holds no professional interest for them, doesn't pay what they want, or doesn't have the appeal they thought it did.

For young Americans who never make it to college or don’t graduate (this constitutes a majority of Americans) this app is even more important. No one is connecting the dots for these kids.

No one is forcing them to face reality and be thoughtful from an early age about their educational and career path. They simply aren’t getting the career education they need.

Still Not Sure The Lack of Career Education Is a Problem? Here are the Facts.

  • The percentage of US high school students who don’t graduate every year hovers between 20%-25%.
  • Only about half of US students go to college at all.
  • Only 56% of US college students graduate within 6 years.
  • Half of US college students change their major 2-3 times on average, lengthening the amount of time they stay in school, expanding the debt that they’re accruing and increasing the likelihood that they’ll drop out.
  • 44% of college graduates end up in careers that don’t require a college degree.
  • According to a 2011 Georgetown University study, choosing the wrong major can more than double a student’s likelihood of being unemployed after graduation
  • The unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds is twice the national average.
  • Young adults in America don’t know what they want to do and don’t know how to get there. And it’s destroying a generation of Americans.

How We Solve The Problem: Video Library and Awesome Career Data

Here’s where PathSource comes in.

PathSource has a simple yet powerful mission – to give young Americans everything they need to make smarter and faster career, education, lifestyle and budget choices.

PathSource has 2,600 informational videos with employees and entrepreneurs of all job types, from hair salon owner to co-founder of Facebook.

We filmed these ourselves.

In fact, 4-time Emmy award winner Jacqui Deegan personally led the creation of our video library. Her credits include making TV shows like Arthur and Curious George.

Each video is a gritty, authentic interview with someone in the workforce who will tell you what they do, how they got there, and give honest feedback and guidance about their career.

Young adults aged 18-30 years old can explore videos and learn about thousands of jobs from the people who do them every day. Each video is short (~3 minutes) in order to hold the viewer’s attention.

Each interview includes responses to 7 questions that we determined through substantial market research. To give you a sense of the type of questions we ask, here are the first 3:

• What do you do in your job on a day-to-day basis?

• What was your educational and career path?

• What do you wish you knew when you started your career that you know now?

We have also collected an unbelievable amount of career data from a multitude of sources that covers salary, living expenses, top areas to work per occupation, and other vital information to enable young Americans to make better decisions.

What kind of data you ask? Here’s a taster of what we are planning to give away for free in the app:

  • Interactive maps of where the jobs are in the US
  • Interactive salary maps
  • Breakdowns of degrees needed for different jobs
  • Personal characteristics that make you a good or not-so-good fit for a job
  • College majors that lead into each job
  • Colleges in your area that offer a given major
  • Every piece of information a young person needs to determine whether or not a given educational path/college is right for him or her

Btw, you should have everyone you know who needs our app sign up now to get early access. They can do so at our Kickstarter microsite: www.pathsource.com/app.

That Sounds Awesome, But So Much Information Can Be Intimidating. How Do You Get Started?

A young adult who uses our app can start by taking the lifestyle assessment and career assessment.

Here’s the idea:

You take a 5-minute assessment where you indicate what your lifestyle is like or what you expect it to be like in the years ahead. You’re asked about everything from whether you have a compact car to what sort of student loan debt you may have. We’ve done the research to translate all of your responses directly into localized cost data.

The output of this is that we can show you how much after-tax salary you need to support your lifestyle and how much of your total monthly expenses are driven by different elements of your spending patterns.

Then you can take a brief career assessment that incorporates not only your interests and perceived aptitudes, but also the output of your lifestyle assessment. When you complete the career assessment you’ll receive recommendations for what type of careers may be a good fit for you, along with associated videos.

Once you find a video where you say, “I can see myself doing this” or “I can envision being passionate about this type of job” you can look at career data to see if the stats fit you and you can look at the education data to see how to get there.

The videos are intended to speak to people’s hearts and help them find their passion. Then our wealth of data speaks to their heads.

Did I mention that you should have everyone you know who needs our app sign up now to get early access at our Kickstarter microsite: www.pathsource.com/app? Well, if you missed it before, now you know!

Wow. There’s A Lot In This App. Make It Simple For Me. How Does This Thing Work Again?

Here’s the process a young person goes through when they enter the app with no idea what they want to do:

1. Take a five-minute “lifestyle assessment”. Have your desired lifestyle translated into a budget and an after tax salary level needed to support your lifestyle. All of the cost data is customized to where you live. Connect your desired lifestyle to job options that will support your budget by using the career assessment.

2. Take a career assessment that connects the output of the lifestyle assessment with your interests and perceived aptitudes to recommend careers and corresponding videos to you.

3. Explore the PathSource library of over 2,600 informational interviews on video with people in every job you can imagine.

4. Once you find a career path that looks interesting, do a deep dive into detailed data about that career as well as a comprehensive reservoir of information about educational options to help you get there.

This Sounds Amazing. Does The App Do Anything Else?

Yep.

The app will also include a job board and personalized recommendations for how you can reduce your monthly expenses and save a few bucks.

We are going to take young people all the way from having no idea what they want to do to the point where they have a job – and put it all in the palm of their hand.

You’re Promising A Lot. Is There Any Proof That This Works?

Over the past couple of years we’ve been working with school districts. Here’s the impact we’ve made:

  • 93% of students would recommend PathSource to a friend
  • 50% of students with little or no career direction found a career that excited them after 1-2 hours of using PathSource
  • 100% of teachers in a multi-school pilot in the Chicago Public Schools recommended PathSource
  • 100% of teachers in that pilot said they planned to use PathSource again in their classrooms

The takeaway: it works. Really well.

Tell Me More About Your Work With Middle Schools and High Schools

Over the past couple of years PathSource has offered a paid service to middle schools and high schools in K-12 school districts as well as to some adult schools and libraries across the country. It has served as an all-in-one career education solution and soft skills/job skills curriculum. Our efficacy data, discussed above, proves that PathSource truly changes lives.

What we give to schools is really customized to fit the needs of an educational institution. Here are some of the things that we offer to middle schools and high schools that are different from the app:

  • Schools can assess and measure interests and perceived aptitudes to really learn what piques each student’s interests and nurture growth accordingly
  • Online assignments
  • A semester-long customizable, editable and shareable job skills and soft skills curricula
  • A dropbox for curriculum
  • A video scavenger hunt
  • Video assignment functions
  • Student profiles
  • Dashboards for district administrators, principals, teachers and students
  • Class management functions
  • Extensive aggregate and individual reporting tools
  • No job board
  • No expense-saving recommendations

We’re taking the core components of the K-12 solution and are rolling them into the mobile app.

To be clear, we are a business. Our goal is to make this sustainable so that we’re not continuously having to go out to raise money to stay afloat. The way that we’re planning to generate revenue from the app is by offering personalized recommendations to young adults about how to save a few bucks based on the information they give us. These are essentially personalized and curated ads for a small number of services that we know will cost less than what they’re using right now. We get paid if they agree with us and use those services. When we did our initial research to find out whether young adults wanted what we’re building, we were surprised to find that the majority of them were actually excited to receive personalized recommendations on how to save money – even though they knew these were really personalized advertisements. It’s our responsibility to do right by each of our users and prioritize giving them good advice over making money. That’s our ethos and it won’t change.

We may also eventually generate revenue from connecting young people with jobs via our mobile job board.

Why Do You Need Kickstarter?

We could have just raised the money for this project from professional investors. And we have received some backing in the past that falls into this category.

But most professional investors don’t like double bottom-line companies like ours. We want more than just revenue. We want to have a huge impact and change millions of lives. We think the best way to do that is to crowdsource funds from others who share our passion for helping young people make better choices.

We’ve already got the core elements of the app built. Your dollars will go to paying our programmers, who are working for WAY below market rate because they believe in our vision. We want you to be our financiers, our users and our promoters so that we can make an app with no compromises that really serves the people who need it most. The more dollars we can bring in, the faster we can get the app out the door and starting working on an Android version so that everyone will have access.

When Will It Roll Out?

It is always dangerous to set an exact date for when an app or software will roll out. The usual rule of thumb is that if something can go wrong it will go wrong. Still, we’ve already got the back-end built and have basic designs. We’re aiming to roll out the iOS app in November. When we roll out the Android version will depend on a number of variables, including how successful this Kickstarter campaign is.

What Do You Think Is the Coolest Prize You’re Giving Away?

Free education.

No question. All of our prizes are cool. But the ones we are uber-fired up about are those that give people the ability to donate to this project and, in return, be able to donate our K-12 education solution to middle schools and high schools around the country.

We love free education in all shapes and sizes. We think you do too.

Together, we want to provide PathSource to as many classrooms as possible FOR FREE! With every additional thousand dollar donation, we’ll be able to provide free access to our complete K-12 solution to up to 2,500 students at no cost!

We can make sure that millions of young adults learn to make better career choices, but we can’t do it without you. That's why we hope you’ll join us in making a difference!

Risks and challenges

The following are our primary risks: That you don’t help us, or that you fund us sufficiently to build the mobile app and we roll out a great product but it’s like a tree falling in the forest because not enough people pay attention.

So...

We need your help.

Fund us! Then tell everyone about it!
