About this project
ImLangage VR is an application that aims to aid language learning by allowing the user to enter the context where the language they are learning is spoken. If you want to learn how to speak Spanish, then go to Spain, German, go to Germany, and in our case France to speak French. We believe that the process of experiencing language in the context in which it is originally spoken will help users to become more familiar and comfortable in these same context if they were to be in them in real life.
The technology behind the app is based on head-mounted display developments that have been made, mostly by Google and its Google cardboard for smartphones. We have tried to make the user experience as simple as possible by only using looks to select buttons and then speaking into your smartphone headset to record your voice. In each situation the user is prompted with a question or interaction and then has options to chose from, after making a selection that user then reads the prompt sentence as it is recorded through the smartphone microphone. At the end of each situation/level a summary page is displayed containing your recordings and native tongue recordings for you to listen to and correct your own pronunciation. Each level will last about 5 minutes of which there are 5.
Thus far we have developed the cafe level and need to extra resources to fund the rest of our development of the course.
Risks and challenges
The main challenges we have already overcome, ie. the programming involved in getting the characters to converse with the user and enabling the user to interact in a structured way. We solved these issues when we developed the Cafe level for the application.
Our main obstacle are the funds to pay for animators and 3d design artists to complete the other 4 levels. Another possible struggle is the amount of animation that we can have in a scene remembering that we are working with smartphones that might not have large processing capacity. There is a general virtual reality problem, that is nausea when using a head-mounted display. We have aimed to solve this problem by not creating a lot of movement for the user in the app.
Once our funds are in we will be able to go ahead and get the work done that is necessary to create an excellent and groundbreaking application.
