You, Fated one, are a beautiful lie, and so too is the world around you
A Far Off Land is a multi-world spanning fantasy RPG (roleplaying game) setting by Megan Bennett-Burks and Jacob Possin for the Fate RPG. We will include rules for Apocalypse World / PbtA in a PDF IF we hit the $7000 funding mark.
Take the role of one of the Fated; shapeshifting beings which are creatures of both worlds. The Fated are akin to the demigods of legend.
Even if your country is not listed for shipping on a pledge we probably CAN ship to you! You are welcome to reach out to us.
Contact us, chances are we will simply need to determine an appropriate shipping cost.
Note on add-ons: Want to get extra copies of the book, PDF, or other goodies, see the add-ons section further down.

The world around you is not the only one, and even it is not what it seems. Embrace your twinned nature, creature both eldritch and human. You are a child born of one world and adopted by the other, and fated to save them both. Ah, but, alas, you are much like the world you were born to, also, not what you seem!
There are two worlds; one is the world you were born into, the one you’ve taken for granted as mundane and explicable. The other is the Far Off Land; where creatures of myth and magic dwell. This wondrous place was crafted by the gods long ago and has a vast array of Mythic realms which lie within it. You and your companions are Fated, shapeshifting beings who are of both worlds, and the fate of both worlds rests in your hands.
Two Worlds, Rabbit Holes and Many Realms
One world is that which your character was born into; it is nearly identical to our own present-day earth though it has powerful magic hidden within it. The Fated call this world The Cage because it serves as a prison for slumbering dragons and primordial giants, who would imperil both worlds were they to awaken.
The other world is the realm of myth, magic, and monsters; the Far Off Land and its many realms from ancient Duat, the Mirrored Cities, and Wonderland. Your adventures will span both these worlds, and to the many rabbit holes which act as passageways from one to the next, including The Alley and its great Goblin Market. The rabbit holes were created thanks to the sacrifice of the goddess Tekmor long ago.
Courts and Factions
The intrigues of the many Courts & Factions are at the heart of the game. Each group has its own vision for the two worlds, and ideas about your place within it; will you fight to see this vision come to its fruition? Or will you rebel and carve out your own place in the two worlds?
The Courts are what remain of the many ancient pantheons of gods and spirits, the Factions are formed by the Fated themselves. Some examples of the Courts include the Munin, the Kemet, the Hatters, and many more. Some examples of the Factions include: The Protectors, The Healers, and the Destroyers
Magic: Elements of Blood and Passion
The Fated have command of magic unique to their kind; to use it they must tap into the element which they have an affinity for, and then channel the power of either:
Their passions which enhance a selection of their skills and allows them to cast spells of an elemental nature.
Or their Blood which they can use to summon forth elemental creatures.
The default elements include air, earth, fire and water, but the game will include rules for adding more, and for alternatives to them for those who want to further diversify their characters.
Why Kickstart This?
We want to be able to hire more artists so that we can include more art in this project, and pay an editor to professionally edit it, as well as pay the writers who have worked so hard on the project.
What is Done Already?
The bulk of the text is written but needs the touch of a professional editor. We also have several pieces of art, and work on the layout of the PDF has begun.
A 12 page sample of the rough draft for a Far Off Land is available on DriveThruRPG.
Below is a smaller selection of pages from the rough draft.
Get YOUR Creations in the Game!
Some of our stretch goals and backer tiers give you the opportunity to get involved in creating creatures, objects, locations, or organizations for the game. If you do so, you will be credited for your creation, and it will be illustrated.

We have discussed having this project edited with Jeremy Morgan. Jeremy Morgan is an excellent editor with plenty of RPG experience. He has edited many projects including Sig: The City Between, Headspace, Baroque Space Opera, Bulldogs! Fate Core, and more.
We have the following stretch goals planned for the game. Note that a few of these will involve you, our funders. If you are interested in being involved in one of the stretch goals, get in touch with us through the comments or email.
Beyond the Four Elements: Magic Expansion - Unlocked at $4500
An expansion for the game's magic system will be released. This stretch goal is already partly written, but needs you our funders to complete! The expansion will include four new options as alternatives to the four elements presented in the game, including Godly Domains, and the powers of Angelic Choirs, plus, two more TBD which we welcome backer suggestions for! This supplement will be released as a PDF.
The Company of Mortals - Unlocked at $5500
This supplement will detail mortal organizations which deal with the Fated and other supernatural beings and their incursions into the world of humans.
Powered by the Apocalypse rules & Playbooks - Unlocked at $7000
I absolutely love both Fate and PbtA, and I've been really wanting a good excuse to release some PbtA material. This is a prime opportunity, so if this reaches this mark I will release a PDF with PbtA playbooks and other PbtA rules so you can run this using the Apocalypse World engine! Please be aware that because game conversions take some extra time and care to do right, the PbtA conversion will if this goal is reached be released after the other material, likely later in 2018 or as late as mid-2019.
Add-ons are for backer tiers above the "Tip-Jar" level, and you will need to include the additional cost of the add-on in the amount you pledge.
Additional Book Copies
Additional books have the following prices:
Softcover standard color: $18
Hardcover standard color: $39
Hardcover premium color: $70
Note: Additional books also come with one copy the PDF add-on each! If you purchase additional books, you will need to also purchase extra shipping and add that to your pledge amount (see the equivalent backer pledge for shipping price or contact us if there is any confusion). BUT, please contact us to see if we can save you money on bulk shipping so you do not pay more than necessary. It is unlikely though possible that we will find you need to double up on shipping for each additional book and we can work with you to confirm this.
Additional copies of the PDF cost $10 each, or if you can get 5 extra PDFs for just $30. This includes additional copies of bonus digital material created due to stretch-goals (such as the potential PbtA rules) which you can give to friends as well.
Shirts & Other Merchandise
Not strictly speaking add-ons, shirts & other merchandise will help fund additional commisions by the artist whose work is featured.
You can find additional merchandise for A Far Off Land here.
How Will this Project be Fulfilled?
The PDF will be fulfilled through DriveThruRPG and you will need a DriveThruRPG account in order to receive digital rewards. The book will also be printed through DriveThruRPG unless a different option becomes clearly preferable. We will need your address in order to ship the book to you. Shipping, print, and markup is all part of the cost of the backer pledges; you DO NOT have to pay for that separately.
Will I get something before the game is done or have to wait?
You should be able to access the PDF of the game's rough draft within a week or less once you pledge. If you do not receive it soon after you pledge please contact us and let us know. Please note that the rough draft will be a very visually simple and art-free version of the game that has not yet been professionally edited, and you should expect it to evolve at least some. We provide this both so you can get a good idea of what the game will like, AND very importantly, so you can provide us with feedback on it so that the game can continue to be honed before it is released.
Can it be used without Fate?
While A Far Off Land does include rules that are Fate-specific, it also provides a wealth of setting material, such as creatures, locations, magical artifacts, plot-hooks, and organizations. While the game was built for Fate, if you are familiar with the concept of rules/system-free RPG books, then you may approach A Far Off Land in the same manner, adapting it to the ruleset of your choice.
Will We Get Character Sheets & Pregens?
Yes, any pledge that includes the digital library will get a collection of pregenerated characters and a blank character sheet.
Do I need Fate Core for this?
A Far Off Land will include rules that are "powered by Fate", this includes monster stats, a magic system, stunts, and more. To take full advantage of these you will need the Fate Core rulebook.
Will I get a print-friendly PDF?
Any of the backer tiers that include the digital files collection will indeed come with a graphically-simplified print-friendly version of the PDF.
What pledge tiers get the stretch goals material?
Anyone who pledges, aside from the Tip Jar option will receive the currently planned stretch goal material. That means that if you pledge for the Digital Collection, the Artificer, etc... you will get the magic system expansion, The Company of Mortals, and the Apocalypse World material. This is, of course, assuming we reach those goals.
If we add more stretch goals later, who receives those will be determined at that time.
Will the extra material made possible by the stretch-goals be made available after the Kickstarter?
At least some of it will be, however, Kickstarter backers get the digital stretch-goals without paying extra for them. If you want to get the stretch-goal material without backing the Kickstarter, that will mean purchasing it separately.
Will you include more stretch-goals/bonus material or more add-ons?
We would really love to. However, we don't want to over-promise. If you have a suggestion for a stretch-goal/add-on you are welcome to suggest it.
A Note On Customs Fees
Some countries outside of the USA may charge customs fees. Please be aware customs fees are not part of the backer pledge costs.
Guidelines on Backer Submissions
The illustration & artist: you may choose from our artists which will illustrate your creation. While this is dependent upon the artist's availability to do additional illustrations, we will give as much priority to backer illustrations as possible.
General Guidelines: If you are a backer for a tier which allows you to submit a creation of your own, you will be contacted in order to discuss your creation. Please keep in mind it absolutely must be either a public domain creation or something original which does not violate copyright law.
The creation also must not include mature content (ie, it must not result in the book needing to be placed in the mature category on DriveThruRPG) and must fit in with the rest of the setting; fantasy, with strong mythological, or folkloric elements, and inspiration from material like Alice in Wonderland, or the Wizard of Oz is quite appropriate, steampunk elements are appropriate, but futuristic science-fiction is, for instance, not.
We will need a write-up on your idea, which we suggest keeping a page or less, and bare in mind that your idea will be taken and written up for the book by the authors (Jacob Possin and/or Megan Bennett-Burks).
If you have any concerns about whether your idea will be acceptable, you are welcome to contact us before backing the tier. We will try our best to address any backer concerns promptly.

Risks and challenges
The bulk of the text for A Far off Land already exists, and the game has been playtested. It is unlikely but possible that something may go wrong; but, serious unpredictable catastrophic or unexpected clashes with someone's day job aside, we should be good to go. However, because we are aware that day jobs and other projects can delay things, we have attempted to consider that by setting our goal to have the work completed by sometime in late 2018, with the possibility of sooner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
