Folding Sled as seen in:
Folding Sled is a sled that folds flat.
This innovative sled transforms quickly and intuitively from an easy-to-store product to a fun, high-performance sled that is suitable for individuals, families, seasonal resorts and hotel rental facilities.
Why a folding sled?
We know that sleds are seasonal products that are only used occasionally.
They can be cumbersome objects but we believe that the design of the Folding Sled reduces many of the clunky characteristics of traditional sleds while improving performance and greatly increasing utility.
For individuals and families, more sleds can fit comfortably into a car so now it’s easy to plan and pack for a day in the snow.
The sled can easily be stored in a garage, under a sofa, in a wardrobe or in any available small space. Therefore, it’s easy to store over the summer and doesn't take up valuable room.
Sled rentals at hotels, hostels and resorts are increasingly popular. With Folding Sled, more sleds can be on offer during the winter and less storage space is required during the off-seasons. For commercial retailers, more stock can be stored in less space.
A new type of sled
We are proud to say that we have created a new category of sleds!
Traditionally there have been two types of sleds – family sleds and racing sleds.
Family sleds are rigid in their construction and their skates are positioned at steep angles (10 degrees). Therefore, they are comfortably slow, difficult to steer and a rider must sit in an upright position.
Racing sleds are flexible in their construction and their skates are set at very wide angles (25 degrees). They are very responsive which allows a rider to control the sled and ride curves by redistributing their body weight. On a racing sled a rider sits very low in order to go fast.
Folding Sled bridges the gap between these two categories and offers a product that caters to both types of users. Folding Sled is constructed as a semi-rigid structure and the angles of its skates are in between the family and racer sleds (15 degrees). It can be used by one individual, an adult with child or two adults.
Folding Sled is versatile – you can use it for racing or leisurely family fun!
How it’s made
The Folding Sled is expertly made with durable materials and its construction combines traditional craft with contemporary technology.
We are applying our expertise in plastic hinging technology to one of the main components of the Folding Sled - the seat shell.
The seat of the sled is made from a durable and recyclable engineering plastic (HDPE) and is cut and scored by a computer controlled manufacturing process (CNC).
For the traditionally made wooden components we’re using locally sourced ash wood. This material is ideal for steam bending sled skates and has been used in traditional sled building for more than a century.
We value local manufacturing and it is important to us that Folding Sled is the result of a local supply and production chain. We are working with Graf Schlitten, an experienced family-run sled manufacturer in Switzerland. The company has almost a century worth of experience in producing sleds.
How you can support the project
Join us to get Folding Sled out of the workshop and onto the slopes!
We need your support in order to raise funds for the first production run of Folding Sled. Graf Schlitten has agreed to manufacture our sled but we need to raise enough money to fund the first production run. You can help us make Folding Sled a reality by pre-ordering a Folding Sled or by pledging for one of our other rewards.
It takes time and love to make a Folding Sled.
Cost associated with shipping the Folding Sled
All of the Folding Sleds are produced and shipped from Switzerland.
Supporters of Folding Sled outside the EU will be responsible for applicable tariffs and customs fees. Those fees are different for each country depending on the value of the parcel.
As with any sport and associated equipment, it’s important to remember that riding Folding Sled is potentially dangerous. We advise riders to wear appropriate safety gear. Any person riding Folding Sled considers all the risks of personal injury and/or damage that can result from riding Folding Sled as their responsibility.

We would like to show our deepest appreciation to all the people who supported us to get this project to this stage. We especially thank family, friends, Graf Schlitten and Sidekick Creatives for making our film and for their consulting work towards this campaign.
Risks and challenges
In the last few years we gained extensive expertise in plastic hinging technology. We have worked on several self-initiated design projects including the popular Folding Boat. We have also collaborated with Jaguar and Land Rover to develop, test and produce a series of automotive accessories that fold flat. This experience informed the design of Folding Sled.
In addition, we are working with Graf Schlitten, an experienced family-run sled manufacturer in Switzerland. The company has almost a century worth of experience in producing sleds.
As a result we are confident in both our ability and our manufacturer’s ability to realise this project.
It’s winter now and we’re regularly testing our prototypes. As with any product that is in the process of being developed there might be the possibility that we discover a component that needs to be redesigned or modified. If there are any modifications, we will find a design solution that stays true to the ideals of the original product. These changes will contribute to a better Folding Sled in the long run.
A design change might affect production timeline but it is our goal to make sure you have your Folding Sled for the first snow of the next winter season.
We want to keep all supporters informed and happy so if any changes are necessary you will be the first ones to know!
