HamRadioNow Video of the 2015 ARRL-TAPR DCC
HamRadioNow will produce online video of the complete 2015 ARRL and TAPR Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) Digital Communications Conference
The ARRL and TAPR Digital Communications Conference is an annual, three-day event that covers just about everything digital in Amateur Radio - hardware, software, operation. This year it's October 9-11 in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights. This KICKSTARTER is to produce video of the event. We have TAPR's blessing, but we are independent, and the KICKSTARTER is not funding the DCC.
TAPR's roots are in packet radio in the 1980's, and that's still around, but their scope has widened dramatically to include software defined radio, digital voice, and all the data modes in use in ham radio. At the DCC, you'll see the first hints of what will be mainstream in five or ten years.
HamRadioNow.tv produced high quality video of the DCC in 2008 and 2009 (released on DVD), and 2011-2014 (released on high-definition streaming video). We covered every talk, including the Saturday banquet "keynote" and the Sunday Seminar, usually a four-hour "deep dive" into a single subject (but we don't cover the "intro" sessions if there is an intro track - not enough cameras and crew). It's an invaluable resource for hams who aren't able to attend the sessions, and even for hams who come in person and want a review.
We've funded the video production for the past two years with successful KICKSTARTERS, thanks to you! The $10,000 goal covers expenses like travel and lodging (we're based in North Carolina, so it's a bit of a trip), and the time and video hardware it takes to shoot, edit and post the programs online. We'll bring about $8000 worth of cameras and production gear, we've got about $30,000 in our studio and editing system, plus the ongoing expenses like Internet and web hosting. And yes, this is nearly a full-time job for Gary KN4AQ, so he ekes out some cash now and then to buy radios. He says that when he wins the lottery, he'll do all this for free.
Almost as important as making a pledge is letting other hams – and small businesses that might want to be 'corporate sponsors' – know about this KICKSTARTER campaign! Please spread the word, on the air, on mailing lists, forums, Facebook, Twitter, Google+... any place you think hams will be interested in helping us produce the video, and won't feel too badly spammed
Risks and challenges
HamRadioNow has successfully produced DCC videos six times, in Baltimore, Austin, Atlanta, Seattle, and twice in Chicago, so we've got a perfect track record (knock wood). Risks include the health of the producer, Gary Pearce KN4AQ (he's in pretty good shape!), severe transportation delays that prevent him and his equipment from arriving in Chicago, and "catastrophic" on-site equipment failure, since this is a one-time, live event. Sadly, these risks are "killer" (sorry about the health-thing, Gary. We don't mean it literally), and would make it impossible to complete the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
