I began work on the painting in the Fall and decided to challenge myself by working on a large format for two reasons- firstly to take advantage of the large studio that I thought I would be losing my lease on (although I managed to get an extension), and secondly, to enter into the "world's largest art competition", ArtPrize.  ArtPrize is in its third year of existence and it is a unique competition because it is up to individual artists and venues to match themselves up with one another and the winners are determined by the voting public.  I managed to secure a venue and I have been working hard trying to get my painting ready for installation on the 10th of September.  While I still have my work cut out for me getting everything finished, I am confident that I will have have a strong piece to exhibit and it is now just a matter of putting in the hours.

For me, this competition represents an important step in my career.  Not only has it forced me to work on a (much) larger scale than I am used to and has provided me with a platform to exhibit ambitious, socially relevant work alongside nearly 1600 other artists, it will give me a huge amount of exposure and a chance at winning the grand prize of $250,000!!

The painting I have under control, but what I need assistance with is transportation.  I need to transport my work from New York City to Grand Rapids, Michigan at the beginning of September and (if it doesn't sell during the exhibition) back again in October.  To do this, I will be renting a U-Haul, which will make it much more affordable than shipping it or getting art handlers to transport it, but it is still a large expense and I am hoping that some of you will help by contributing any amount you can to help me get my piece to the competition.

All of the money raised will go towards transportation- truck rental to and from New York, gas and tolls.

Thank you all very much.

Also, if any of you know people in Grand Rapids, or plan on going yourself from Sept. 21st through October 9th, please spread the word about my work and encourage people to vote!!

All the best,
