During the summer of 2014 I am making an approximately 16,000 mile road trip to answer the question that has been on Americans’ minds since the late 19th century: who has the best ballpark hot dog.

Lists abound as to who offers the best hot dog in the United States. And numerous people have offered opinions on which Major League Baseball is the best ballpark. But what no one has investigated or determined is which Major League ballpark has the best hot dog and baseball experience. Simply, put...where can one sit in a stadium and enjoy the culinary connection between hot dogs and baseball at its best.

Baseball is America’s pastime. And hot dogs are the one food that everyone associates with our nation’s cuisine. What could be more American than having a dog at the ballpark. Not only is it deeply traditional, a hot dog just seems to taste better at the ballpark….and no one knows why. I intend to find out.

At this point, mid-June, I have put the dogs to the test in 15 of the 30 MLB parks and 12 minor league parks. While the main goal is to determine which major league team can boast the best dog, I also test as many minor league venues as possible. It is a hearty undertaking. I am at the mercy of geography, team schedules and personal budget. It is not as simple as driving from stadium A to stadium B, the team actually has to be playing in it. To keep costs down I am either sleeping in my car or couch surfing and cooking most of my own food. By my estimates I should finish by early to mid-August.

It wouldn’t be a worthwhile adventure if I couldn’t share my findings, trials, tribulations, successes and celebrations with baseball fans and foodies alike. That’s why I need your help. I intend to chronicle my ballpark pilgrimage and transform it into a book tentatively titled “Gone to the Dogs.” It will allow readers to venture into America’s ballparks and have a dog in the stands without leaving their living room. And it will answer that age-old question of who really does have the best ballpark hot dog.

My kickstarter goal is $2000. That will help defray a large portion of the cost to self-publish “Gone to the Dogs.” Your contribution will cover things like ISBN number, editing, layout, design, e-book formatting, and printing. All of the things associated with bringing a book to market. While I would love for a large publisher to pick up my book for publication, that just isn’t how it is done these days. Unless you are an established author publishers really don’t want to talk to you. Self-publishing is the book market of the 21st century. And I ask for you assistance and help in bringing an odyssey of travel, baseball and hot dogs to print. Hasn’t the world waited long enough? Thank you.

Risks and challenges

The only challenge involved in this project really is not getting funded. If I do not meet my goal it will be difficult to publish the book. Other hurdles include possible delays due to editing or design. The goal is to have the book out before the start of the 2015 baseball season.

You provide the grill and drinks and I will come to your house and bring hotdogs, buns and all the condiments and grill up some the finest franks you have ever tasted. I will provide an assortment of hot dogs that is representative of my trip. During this feast you can pick my brain about the best hotdog, Ballpark, or overall baseball hotdog experience. If you live within a 50 mile radius of the Tulsa area I will drive to your place. If you live outside of the Tulsa area and want to provide transportation for me to come to your house or business I would be happy to come.
