Revenge: Stage 1 COMPLETE!

Dear Backers,

WE ROCK!!!

35% FUNDED in 2 DAYS!!!
35% FUNDED in 2 DAYS!!!

We are defying ALL industry expectations. When the Indiegogo campaign stalled, I reached out to several industry insiders for their insights - was the problem with my campaign, or something more fundamental? The responses were soul crushing:

  • I'd drastically overestimated the appeal of Skip Beat! - maybe 500 fans will get behind the project, but more than 1,000? Impossible.
  • Shoujo fans spend money on the manga but not DVDs
  • Skip Beat! is a niche, sleeper show; romance shows without fantasy or scifi are dead in the water
  • If the fan base isn't out there, I should cut my loses and let this project have a quiet death

I felt like a fool. I'd fallen in love with Skip Beat! and had convinced TV TOKYO that there were hundreds, no thousands!! of fans (like me!) who would support an official release. It turns out everyone else in the industry knows better than me - shoujo anime doesn't sell.

Am I an idiot!?!?!
Am I an idiot!?!?!

But then I remembered why I fell in love with Skip Beat! in the first place. Kyoko grabs the lemons to make her lemonade. Horrible Love Me Section outfit? Wear it with pride and get noticed. Someone steal your idea during an audition? Get even by taking it to a whole new level. Need to convince a kid that her father really loves her? Give voice to the child's deepest fears, no sugar coating.

Skip Beat!, dead in the water?

Perfect.

We will get our revenge.

Next goal: 50% funding. Let's do it!

I know so many of you are sharing this campaign. Thank you!!! Your enthusiasm is our most powerful weapon for convincing other people that Skip Beat! is worthy of support. All of the comments on the campaign page are fantastic!!! There have been so many great ideas for outreach - please keep them coming! Have a brainstorm? Please email me at skipbeat@piedinc.com  !!!

You are amazing and inspiring!!!

Ann, first off, thank you so much for taking on the massive endeavor of bringing this great series to US home video. If this campaign is successful, I hope your US release is able to spread awareness of this show even further to people who might otherwise never have had access to it.

On a related note, have you considered doing an AMA on Reddit for this campaign? If you posted to r/anime about it and let places like ANN and Crunchyroll know beforehand , I wouldn't be surprised if it helped to further fuel the campaign. Either way, thanks for the great work and here's hoping we're successful!

Another male fan of Skip Beat! here. I think it's a tragedy that more people aren't seeing this show. It's so much more than I expected. Kyoko is awesome. Seriously, watching her snap for the first time is worth the price of pledging. I cannot wait to hear that scene in English! The VA for Kyoko is going to have to show off her entire range and then some.

I wish I had more to give! I upped my pledge 3 times already but it doesn't feel like enough! I want a second season. I hope we hit $100k by Friday

I'm getting more and more excited! I can't wait to hear them in English~ *fangirling*

@Cliffton: You really need to watch the series - stream it somewhere, it is extremely good! I am also male, and I'm over 50 as well - yet I really enjoy many shoujo anime titles, and I have quite a few in my anime collection. I like seeing the romance aspect from the point of view of the female protagonist - and I also love seeing a strong female character in that type of role - So Skip Beat! was a great series for me to watch. I have two teenage daughters who happened to get their old man hooked on anime fairly recently, only in just the last 5 years or so, so they may have had some bearing on why I like shoujo anime too... I'm hoping this will be a successful campaign, as I really want to add this title to my anime collection - and on Blu-ray, too!

I just backed it. I'm male, but I honestly watch all genres of anime and dubs are quite amazing and special too. I haven't seen this show personally, but I have seen images or AMVs of it before so I do know it has some sort of popularity. I really want to see this show in English and the English voice actors I have listened to since the 90's are excellent with amazing talent that breathes life into the characters I love watching so much. I would be honored in owning this show within my dvd/bluray collection. Thanks! <3

Ann, you are my hero! I love that you are fighting so hard for this title, refusing to give up in the face of adversity. Kyoko would be so proud!

We love Skip Beat!!! It's my second favorite anime of all time! I totally back this up! Let's go Love Me fans!

      What an awesome update!

I personally didn't back on indiegogo because of the original flexible funding option. Looking at forums, it seems other people thought the same. While I do agree that shoujo anime is hard to sell here (and I would like to know why!) Skip Beat is such an awesome series and deserves an official release.

I'm so excited, it's about time Kyoko's had her NA debut. This is what Skip Beat is all about.

Cograts! This seems to be going much better than the Indiegogo champaign! As a person who can only watch dubs, this champaign is so great to see happening! I am a fan of all types of genres of anime and to see someone to put faith in a genre of anime that sadly gets looked over when it comes to dubs makes me happy! So thanks so much for putting your faith in this show. You got my support! Lets show those industry insiders what we can do!

Ann, I suggest you should reach out to ANN an/or Crunchyroll and tell them exactly what you just posted. The community on that site is massive, and a full interview would really give potential backers a chance to see the heart and determination about this project. Even if a new backer only puts up a dollar, we a still moving forward. Thank-you for not giving up. I believe we can do this!

I'd probably also talk about how hard it is to fund shoujo anime and trying to figure out why. I'm sure there are some sympathetic TV critics out there who could shed some insight into the reasons why. Try Alyssa Rosenberg at the Washington Post and see if she has any ideas or insights. She's more of a western comic book fan, but she is familiar enough with the manga/anime scenes to be helpful.

    16. Kevin Lembcke on

Loving your obvious enthusiasm for the show. So glad to see a positive response from fans thus far. Let's keep it up.

given by kicktraq this project got $36,747 day 1 and $17,757 day 2 and over almost 2 weeks we got 23k on indiegogo it seems likely the only problem was indiegogo :P.

hopefully things continue to go well. 50% would be what $77,500, given the project is following a mostly normal kickstarter path so far (with a little less than a 50% drop off on day 2) though sadly we are into the weekend which tends to kill momentium quite a bit... with 22k to go I would expect to hit 50% funded on either saturday the 26th or sunday the 27th. earlier than that would be great. later than that would not, but would still be within reason to reach the goal, just not be looking good for a stretch goal. as the last two days of the campaign if it follows normal kickstarter trends (adjusting a bit for the indiegogo bump) it would be likely this project will see about 50-60k on the last two days.

lets see how my predicting goes :P
