ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Join this campaign to create the best possible North America DVD release for Skip Beat!, the story of humble 16-year-old Kyoko Mogami unleashing her true talents to become a powerhouse actress.
Skip Beat! is one of the great shoujo anime series of all time. If you already know the anime, you'll share my outrage that Skip Beat! has never had an official North American DVD release. If you're new to Kyoko's world, you are in for a treat. Check out the show on Crunchyroll. These 25 riveting episodes are as fun and unpredictable as Kyoko Mogami herself. She’s passionate, wacky, vulnerable, and bold – sometimes all in the same scene.
The story is driven by Kyoko discovering her true love – but we’re not talking about a boilerplate romance. Kyoko's pride comes first! Crushed after being used as a stepping stone by her pop star friend Sho, she decides to seek revenge by joining show business! The guys in her life trigger blasts of Kyoko’s anger…
...and occasional moments of inspiration…
Even as Kyoko's romance with Ren, a beloved actor, blossoms, she’s ultimately pursuing her own dreams: Honing her craft as an actress…
...Going to high school, (almost) like an ordinary girl…
…And having a best friend. (Really, they get along great.)
Skip Beat! stands on its own with a funny, always surprising heroine. The characters surrounding Kyoko are just as compelling, and they grow as people in the same way that she does. The universality of her story inspires intense passion among the series' fans and transcends the typical shoujo demographics. With Skip Beat!, finding yourself comes BEFORE falling in love...that message is empowering.
And be warned, Skip Beat! has been known to change lives. Once Kyoko's gutsiness gets under your skin, you just might find yourself doing something a little crazy... like this campaign! Our goal is ambitious, and we're up against a lot of challenges. But we are here to fulfill our dream: to create the best possible Skip Beat! release for YOU!
This Kickstarter is a rescue operation.
TV TOKYO, the licensor, believes that Skip Beat! deserves an English dub to reach the largest possible audience, and has always set the dub as a requirement for the release. No dub, no release.
In addition to the brand-new dub, the release will include subtitles with the original Japanese audio featuring command performances from Marina Inoue (Kyoko Mogami), Katsuyuki Konishi (Ren Tsuruga), and Mamoru Miyano (Sho Fuwa).
Folks, this campaign is the ONLY CHANCE for Skip Beat! to get an official release in North America. This is YOUR chance to own Skip Beat!, so it is yours forever!
And, there is more at stake.
Skip Beat! is a fantastic series, no argument there. 96% of the 14,000-plus ratings on Crunchyroll are 5 out of 5 stars. For thousands of fans, Skip Beat! is a near perfect anime. On My Anime List it ranks #205 - that's in the top 0.02% of ALL ANIME SERIES EVER! Anime News Network gave the series Grade A and calls it a "full-course feast of fiendishly addictive entertainment for all ages and sexes."
But, the anime industry assumes that even with Skip Beat!'s calibre, fans will not support a dub for a shoujo title. All eyes are on this campaign to see the fan turnout. Can we prove the naysayers wrong? This is our chance to send a message that if given the chance, fans will turn out for compelling coming-of-age stories with strong female leads.
My cardinal rule for crowdfunding is to make the initial goal within reach for the fan base. Since the dub is non-negotiable, I've brought down the initial funding target by making the Blu-ray a stretch goal. That removes about 14% of the localization costs from the chart below. I have also taken on the licensing and material fees, which cuts another 15% from the costs.
Let's rally together to achieve our base goal of $155K for a first-class DVD release, and get to the stretch goal of $185K for the Blu-ray. The Japanese release was DVD only, and Blu-ray will be an achievement to be proud of. Justin Sevakis has reviewed the original SD material and affirms that it is a perfect candidate for upscale to HD.

This campaign is being produced by Ann Yamamoto of Pied Piper, Inc. I ran the Time of EVE: The Movie International Blu-ray release Kickstarter campaign. It was trial by fire, but I came out the other end with a mission: Take on the risk of licensing overlooked gems and execute awesome localizations with backers.
The dub is being produced by a talented team of true-blue Skip Beat! fans:
Mela Lee - Executive Producer. She has wowed fans with powerful performances including Rin Tohsaka in Fate/stay night, Shinku in Rozen Maiden, Yuki Cross in Vampire Knight, Rachel Alucard from Blaz Blu, Natalie in Scrapped Princess, and Darry in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Cristina Vee - Executive Producer/Casting. Cristina joins Mela for producing and casting on the dub. Her 100+ roles as a voice actress include Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon, Mio Akiyama in K-ON!, Alisa Bosconovitch in Tekken Blood Vengeance, and Homura Akemi in Madoka Magica.
Jason Charles Miller – Executive Producer/Central Command Studios President and veteran voice actor and musician in his own right. Just some of the anime titles recorded there include GUNXSWORD and Hellsing Ultimate!
We are also privileged to work with Justin Sevakis at Media OCD for the Blu-ray and DVD authoring, menu design, and upscaling the original SD material for the Blu-ray. Justin did heroic work on the Time of EVE: The Movie release, including subtitle tracks in 10 languages, troubleshooting inverted Hebrew text, and insane menu navigation maneuvers. He is the only person who we trust for the critical work of getting Skip Beat! onto DVD and Blu-ray.
And we are proud to be partnering with Rightstuf for fulfillment of your rewards. There are certainly cheaper options, but Righstuf is the only place that will give your packages that extra TLC. And, I know from personal experience with Time of EVE that Righstuf has the ability to mobilize fans behind titles. Righstuf is far more than an online retailer. I see Righstuf as a community, and it's the right place (!) to spend the dollars from our campaign.
About Skip Beat!
Skip Beat! aired on TV TOKYO in 2008-9 and streams with subtitles on Crunchyroll, and is based on Yoshiki Nakamura's on-going bestselling manga, published in North America by VIZ Media.
Risks and challenges
I know from the Time of EVE: The Movie Kickstarter that unexpected factors can lead to delays in the delivery of rewards. I can't promise to control all of those factors. However, I do promise to keep the channels of communication open, and to always be accountable to the backers who have supported this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
