About

There Was a Boss Fight! is a series of pre-made encounters for 5th edition that focus on an ending fight with a “boss.” Each boss has its own background and unique mechanics, but are designed to be easily adapted into your own story. Perfect for a onetime adventure or the culmination of a campaign.

These encounters are written, designed and playtested by Ryan Forgione. They are edited by the amazing Rico Gilbert, and feature artwork by the incredibly talented Alyne Leonal.

Each module contains all the necessary information to run the encounter, bundled into one convenient PDF file. This makes it easy to run from any electronic device, but they are also designed with offline play in mind. The aesthetic is a minimalist one. This helps not only for my own sanity in creation, but is meant to be printer friendly while still retaining visual appeal. Additionally, they’re designed for optional dual sided printing, as well as the margins being set for binding or 3 hole punched.

The encounters are written in a linear fashion. Things begin with an introduction/background information and few hooks to help set things up. What follows next is the bulk of the encounter, be it an NPC to follow, a few monsters to fight, or even just puzzles or traps along the way. Everything you’ll need to lead up to the inevitable boss fight. Lastly, everything is wrapped up in a conclusion, complete with rewards! There’s also an appendix for quick reference to monster stat blocks, reference tables and magic items.

This all sounds pretty simple and straight forward huh? But wait, there’s more!

Every There Was a Boss Fight! module also includes:

Maps

Designed with an old school feel in mind, each map contains intuitive visual icons to reference what’s going on in that area, be it enemies, traps, or even just background objects. There’s are three types of maps included (with and without grids):

  •  GM Specific: All the details, including that which your players aren’t meant to see, from hidden passageways to monster locations.
  •  Player Safe: Details everything immediately apparent to the players, without revealing features reserved for the GM.
  •  Full Size Printable: Same as the Player Safe maps, but printable in 1 inch grid size, same as most standard battle mats.

 Unique Boss Mechanics

Each boss is designed with a non-standard mechanic, making for challenging, engaging encounters and keeping players on their toes! The players will be sure to remember these unique showdowns!

New Magic Items

What’s a boss fight without loot? Each encounter includes three new magic items. Some may be akin to or based off preexisting magic items, but all are themed to the individual encounter. It’s like taking home a souvenir!

So, things sound interesting so far but still want to know what you’re signing up for? Here are the synopses of the encounters, and make sure to download the FREE level 1 adventure.

For a level 1 party

The PCs find themselves in a precarious position. There’s a murderer on the loose, and they’re tasked with aiding in the investigation. As simple and cliché as this plot line may be, from the beginning they’ll participate in a pseudo choose your own style adventure.

For a 2nd-level party

Goblins. Whether their viewed as a nothing more than vermin, a menace, or even comical, they often serve as a stepping stone on the path of legend for any adventurer. But why should adventurers be the only ones to walk along such a path? For one such goblin, fate has decided to give him a chance. Can the PCs intercept beforehand, or will the goblin’s path lead him from stepping stone, to rolling boulder?

For a 3rd-level party

There are entities in the multiverse who are engrossed in legend, but rarely (if ever) actually seen. They are the ones who operate behind the scenes, making the common folk question if those whom are deemed most powerful are actually just marionettes; their actions guided by these mysterious individuals. (Un)Fortunately for the PCs, they’ll find themselves at the beckoning of such a being, though his reasons for their inclusion is as mysterious as he.

For a 4th-level party

In order to feel safe, there are times when security is needed. This philosophy is easily viewed in our real lives, so it should come at no surprise to see it in a fantasy setting. Like the real world, there is likely to be those in the fantastical world who make such a task their life’s work, and also like the real world, there are times when these folks get together to put their work on display, for both consumer and competitor. For the PCs in this encounter, they get to experience one such creators work, while the players get to revel in a sense of nostalgia.

For a 5th-level party

There’s times when the travel to the nearest bit of civilization is long and tiresome, and spotting something like a tavern in the wilds is like an oasis in the desert. This is no mirage however, this is the Red Rum Inn! So come inside and take a load off. Plenty of spacious rooms are available, or choose from an astounding array of spirits, alongside a fresh made meal prepared by our inhouse chef, sourcing only locally obtained ingredients. Yes, at the Red Rum Inn, our goal is to make your visit so pleasant, you might never leave.

For a 6th-level party

Yo dawg, I heard you like stories. So I put a story, inside a story so the PCs can adventure inside an adventure. I also heard that your players like magic items, so I pitted them against a boss based off one of the most legendary magic items of all time.

Risks and challenges

Though this is my first Kickstarter, there’s virtually no risk involved. Each module has already been created, edited, and bundled into a PDF bundled with every other addition included. Barring a few edits here and there, they'll be ready to go as soon as the campaign finishes and collections process. No shipping delays to stress over, just a download link sent from DriveThruRPG. Simply pick out an encounter module you’d like to run, give it a good read, and then you and your players can get those dice rolling!
