Welcome to the Kickstarter page for World Supper Adventure! I’m glad you made it here and I think you’ll like what’s going on. I definitely do, and I get more excited about it every day!
So, what is this project?
World Supper Adventure is a collection (in progress) of recipes, stories, and advice from home cooks around the globe. Basically, I’m finding families, or anyone really, to take me in, take me to the market, and teach me how to make their favorite meals. This project already exists as a successful blog (which you can visit @ www.worldsupperadventure.com) and, with funding, the research will continue for the next year and continue to be shared through this blog. At the end of this first year, I’m getting together with designers to translate this work into a beautifully published hard-back book. This is a book I've looked for myself, but haven't been able to find on any shelf, so I'm making it on my own.
Will this book benefit anyone other than me?
It sure will. 25% of the profits from book sales will help send students to culinary school and do culinary internships abroad. My tuition at the French Culinary Institute was paid in full by a very generous person and I'd like for others to feel that same relief I so much appreciated.
My readers have grown to a quantity that I could not have imagined in such a short period of time. And now, after leaving my steady income to make this a full-time job, it's beyond my capacity to manage it and financially support the work that still needs to be done.
The long-term plan is for this to be more than one volume, one coming out once a year, and eventually covering every country on our pretty little planet. If I can get the funding from Kickstarter for this first round, I’m confident that the profits from the first book will cover the research for the next volume...and so on. Another thing I really hope for is that this project will eventually reach a level of success that I’ll be able to employ others on this journey. Artists, photographers, book designers. I want this to benefit a lot of people.
Other than recipes, what will this book be?
Each chapter (and there will be over 40 of them) will be made up of several parts:
1. Interview: A talk with my host about why they chose the recipes they’re sharing/ what that food means to them, what hospitality and being a good host means to them, and just whatever fun stories they’d like to share.
2. Market: A trip to the market with my host where we learn about the ingredients we’re about to use. How to pick out the best, a brief history of that ingredient, perhaps some other uses for them.
3.Recipe: Here’s where we’ll go back to the host’s home so they can teach me how to prepare the meal from start to finish. You’ll get step by step instructions and their very valuable tips.
4. Food finds: Food finds will be it’s own chapter aside from each home visit. It will be a fun list of ingredients I’ve found along the way that weren’t in any of my hosts recipes, but are interesting and you’ll possibly have never seen them before. Each Food Find will also include a short, simple little recipe including the item.
How long until you have a book in your hands? The rest of the research for this first volume will take a year or less. The plan is to spend a week in each location to gather all of my information before moving on to a new place and a new person. When this time is up, I’ll spend 6 months or less putting all of my information together, working with designers and editors, and getting this little beauty off to a publisher.
The Money part:
What will the $15,017 do? It will fund the research, recipe testing, transportation, any translators I might need along the way, writing, editing, and photography for the book. Also included in this budget are the necessary costs to prepare manuscripts, sample chapters and proposals for literary agents and publishers, as well as legal fees. We will self-publish if necessary, don’t worry, but have confidence that this will be picked up by the publishing industry. I already have several connections that will most likely prove to be very helpful in this step.
THIS IS ALL OR NOTHING!
If donors like you collectively pledge at least $15,017, WSA gets to move ahead and keep its steam. If the collective pledges do not meet the $15,017 goal, then the project gets nothing, and that would leave me, you, and a lot of readers heartbroken... And you won’t get any of these fun rewards! Every little bit really does help, so please think about what you can afford. If you don’t think you can afford anything, think about how much you spent to see a movie or how much you spend to go out and have a beer. Surely, giving to this project will be more rewarding than one beer...am I right?
So you know, your credit card won't be charged for the amount you pledge unless we get all $15,017 or more in funding by the end of this campaign.
