Space Revolver started out as a single screen one-hit-kill platforming action game heavily influenced by games like Towerfall and Samurai Gunn, with gameplay and character control influenced by Megaman X, all set in a world deeply inspired by Cowboy Bebop. It’s slowly grown into a game with a branching single player campaign, custom character creator, online multiplayer, and an in depth level editor.
Space Revolver has also won the most prestigious of all awards!
Oh, and it’s coming out on PC, Mac, and Linux.
When I originally started making this game, it was going to be a multiplayer only game. As I continued to add new weapons, characters, and locations, a story grew along with them. That’s why I’m coming to Kickstarter. I want to grow Space Revolver from being a small project to being a game with an incredible single player campaign and tons of multiplayer modes.
The multiplayer part of this game is already over half way done, but it’s taken me over half a year to get to this point! Out of that time, art has been the biggest time sink. With the funds from this Kickstarter, I’ll be able to contract people to make the art and music for the game and finish the multiplayer part of this game sometime this summer. The single player campaign’s release date will depend on a few more factors, such as if stretch goals are met, but it should be close to release by December of this year.
Well for starters we have a custom character creator that allows you to draw your own character from scratch. You want to play as a cyborg corgi in a Power Loader from Aliens? What about a beloved character from a show you adore? Go right ahead!
Unlike most other games in the genre, Space Revolver will also have Online Multiplayer. You can play with your friends across the globe instead of just across the couch!
Don't have friends? That's fine! There will also be a large branching single player story for you to experience!
I’m glad you asked!
You’re a down on your luck gun for hire who’s in serious debt to an outer rim mob boss, but lucky for you, a job that will wipe that debt off the map just landed in your lap! All you have to do is sneak in to an office building and steal a box! What’s in the box? A mysterious VHS tape with a secret that the Federation will do anything to keep under wraps! As luck would have it, there’s no such thing as easy money, and the people who hired you want to use this tape to blackmail the Federation, and they’ll turn you in unless you transport it for them. The only problem? The closest working VCR is on the other side of the galaxy. Now it’s your job to jump from planet to planet through a small band of non-federation controlled space, picking up odd jobs, bribing warp gate guards, and staying one step ahead of the Federation’s troops until you can deliver the VHS and probably retire.
The TI 810: An energy weapon with a series of linked capacitors that allow for up to six shots, even in a vacuum. This lead to it being colloquially called a “Space Revolver”, though it has no revolving parts. It can be charged to discharge multiple short range energy blasts in a spread pattern, or overcharged to create a piercing beam, though overcharging the battery requires it to recharge completely before it can be used again. It’s been adopted as a staple for bounty hunters and pirates alike due to its quick rate of fire, recharge time, and versatility.
Booster Boots: Unlike jetpacks and gravity bubbles, booster boots can wirelessly syphon energy from TI brand capacitors, removing the need bulky battery packs. This allows the user to chain as many mid-air dashes and dodges as their energy source has capacitors, the drawback being it eats through the capacitors charges. When paired with a space revolver, the user can perform incredibly complex aerial maneuvers, but if the user dashes through all 6 charges, they will need to wait for a capacitor to recharge before firing a shot.
The Art of Persuasion: Having trouble convincing that shopkeeper to give you a discount? Need a bouncer to let you in? Has a crazed megalomaniac been monologuing for just a bit too long? The answer is simple! Just pull your gun on them! You can pull out your gun during literally any line of dialogue, but be warned, some people don’t like that. This mechanic has been heavily influenced by living in Florida.
Secondary Weapons: Is your trusty space revolver not cutting it for you? Feel free to pick up a variety of other weapons and items. Motion activated mines, point defense drones, hard-light swords, pilotable rockets, flamethrowers, gravity bombs, remote controlled buzz saws, and more!
From the beginning I’ve been working almost exclusively as a single man team, doing all design and coding myself. I’ve also done most of the art. I have contracted some of the character animation and hired a professional musician (Francisco Cerda, who has previously worked on Gunpoint, Jamestown, and Witchmarsh) to create the soundtrack. If I want the game to grow to its full potential, I’m going to need some help.
As you can see in the lovely pie graph above me, the vast majority of the funds are going towards improving the game.
We have them!
20,000: The level editor and custom games will be greatly improved.
25,000: The Soundtrack will be fully recorded live in a studio with a Jazz band!
30,000: The game will have an additional 5 planets that will appear as levels in the single player and multiplayer versions of the game.
35,000: The Game will have a super-secret extra boss and ending!
40,000: A Second Playable Campaign! What would happen if someone else stole the VHS? Play as another character chosen by backers who starts with a different default weapon
45,000: The game will have a Co-Op mode and new team based online modes!
50,000: Space Revolver will have a roguelike mode! Jump between randomly generated planets as you try to get to the VCR, but be careful, it’s all over if you die!

Risks and challenges
Making a video game takes a lot of time, a LOT of time. The biggest risk is that Space Revolver will take longer than anticipated to actually come out. Outside of that, there are very few risks. Most of the core mechanics of the game have already been completed. The game has already been greenlit so it will be coming out on steam. I guess there’s a risk that I die of a heart attack from all the stress of running a kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
