Measure your light intake and manage your sleep-wake cycle over time. LYS guides you to get more light during the day and to avoid blue light at night.
Not getting enough light during the day makes you feel lazy and without energy, and too much light in the evening prevents you from a good night’s sleep.
Look around you right now, what kind of light are you exposed to?
If you're like 87% of people living on earth, you probably spend most of your time indoors. From your home and public transport to your workplace, getting enough natural day light to keep a healthy circadian rhythm can seem difficult.
LYS is the world's first user-focused light measuring wearable and app that takes care of your circadian rhythm.
Patent pending technology developed by LYS Technologies Ltd.
We’ve worked tirelessly over the past year to develop a sleek Scandinavian-designed wearable sensor and app that take care of your circadian rhythm.
The results of using LYS are incredibly positive. Trial data showed that using the wearable and app for three weeks decreased the time to fall asleep by 40% and tripled users' perceived energy levels during the day.
In addition, LYS empowered users to make small changes in their daily routine that had significant impact on their wellbeing. From crossing to the sunny side of the street, to eating lunch by the window or shifting the angle of their work desk, LYS helped users make lasting improvements.
Embedded within the genes of almost all living beings on Earth are the instructions for a biological clock that mark the passage of approximately 24 hours. Biological clocks, or circadian rhythms (circa "about", diem "a day"), help time our sleep patterns, alertness, mood and much more.
Natural daylight triggers our metabolism to start working: it gives us energy and boosts our concentration levels, and after sunset our bodies produce melatonin, a natural sleeping medicine.
With darkness and warm dim light our body temperature drops, melatonin (our natural sleep medicine) is produced and tiredness increases in anticipation of going to bed.
Under normal light conditions, we experience a 24-hour pattern of light and dark, and our circadian clock uses this signal to align biological time to the day and night.
But, in urban environments most people are exposed to the wrong light at the wrong time of the day and maintain a lifestyle completely out of sync with their natural circadian rhythm.
Light is the main time-giver for our brain and body. Any disruption from unnatural light at an unnatural time therefore upsets our energy levels, mood and sleep patterns.
Your circadian rhythm is so important that it just won a Nobel Prize!
Just weeks ago, American researchers were awarded the prize for their discoveries of the mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.
In urban environments our lifestyle no longer relies on inputs from nature. Health-consciousness is on the rise, yet we equally spend 90% of our time inside our homes and offices, with a daily average of 10 hours glaring at screens. We constantly surround ourselves with artificial lighting in a routine that makes little sense to our body's circadian rhythm.
Disrupting your circadian rhythm has a direct impact on your sleep and it is recommended to avoid blue wavelengths of light 2-3 hours before bedtime.
A good night’s sleep is essential for the restoration of cells and memory consolidation.
LYS Technologies has developed the LYS sensor and specialised algorithms to mimic the photoreceptors in the eyes and calculate circadian stimulus. Inputs gathered by the sensor are analysed, transformed into empowering insights, displayed directly in the LYS app.
LYS has been developed to integrate with everyday life. It is a small, Scandinavian-designed device that is discreet and can be clipped onto virtually anything, making it easy for you to get syncing with the natural day and night cycle of light for a healthier living.
- With miniature sensors that replicate the photoreceptors inside your eyes, the LYS wearable knows exactly what type of light your eyes are receiving in real-time.
- Clip it onto just about anything. With a fresh navy blue finish, the LYS wearable was intricately designed to be a one style fits all device.
- The battery lasts for 7 days on a single charge and we’ve also made LYS water resistant and long lasting.
- LYS is a coin size wearable with a diameter of 28.21 mm and the weight is 4g.
Understand the light in your everyday surroundings.
The charger is designed as a bedside table docking station, allowing you to track the light in your bedroom while you sleep.
The LYS app will give you personalised insight into your data and deliver not just informative, but also prescriptive information to help transform data into action. With functions such as real-time readings, overview dashboards and goals of light received through the day ("Day Light") and throughout the night ("Sleep Ready") you can take charge of your own data.
How does the light surrounding you every day affects you?
- With the DAY graph, you can get an overview of your 24-hour light habits, what time of the day you’re missing targets and how you’ve improved with LYS.
- Tell the LYS app when you go to sleep and when you wake to customise your personal goals. Daily Light and Sleep Ready goals propel you to reach your optimum light exposure, every day.
- Get real-time actionable feedback with the NOW function to help you understand your surrounding light and how it affects you.
- Compatible with iOS devices for december delivery.
- Compatible with Android devices for February delivery. (If you have pledged for December delivery and you are an Android user, you will have to keep in mind that the Android app is still under development. We apologise for that and we are doing everything we can to speed up the process.)
The LYS app offers:
Since launching our first prototype 8 months ago, both the LYS wearable and app have been through considerable identity shifts to suit the needs of the users.
The LYS MVP that was sent out for test.
Experiments with shape and design.
We worked intensely with designers, engineers, researchers and our valuable test users to ceaselessly tweak the LYS device until we were sure both you and us will be wholeheartedly pleased with it.
We tested the LYS wearable and app with 100 test participants from all over the world.
Among our results, we found that the average time to fall asleep decreased from 27 to 16 minutes and that perceived energy levels tripled.
"It’s the only device I’ve ever seen that tracks the amount of light I get. I like how LYS tells me what my recommended amount is. So I think it is very helpful to understand the amount of light you are getting, and whether that’s enough. Or whether you need to supplement it. I saw that my energy levels and my mood went up with more natural light"
"I became aware that the days where I was outside a lot made me more energetic in the moment, and tired in a more natural way in the evenings. That’s how I think I experienced the impact of LYS on my wellbeing the moment I started walking a bit more and also I chose other places to sit in my office. You know, so I would be closer to the light."
LYS was first developed by our founder Christina Blach Petersen while studying a combined Masters in Innovation Design and Engineering at London’s world–renowned Royal College of Art and Imperial College.
"I realised that using the traditional sleep trackers didn’t help me, but that I needed something to track the influencing factors on sleep - like light."
What makes LYS unique, and what we’re excited about is that we’re the first to work directly with our users, allowing each user to manage and measure their personal light data. It’s all about how LYS helps each user create healthier light habits.
We are determined to raise awareness to the important role natural light has on our daily life, and how, together with LYS, we can bring modern living back in sync with nature.
If you've been wondering, the term 'LYS' means light in Danish!

We are reasonably far in the process of moving from prototype to production. We are currently producing the fourth version of the electronics and we have implemented improvements for every new prototype we have been through. The components are mounted on the PCBs in Denmark to make sure we produce the best quality and that we can easily go there if something goes wrong.
The biggest risk is the plastic components. We have been 3D printing the cases until now. In three weeks we we get the first plastic parts out of the moulds and we mitigate this risk by personally travelling to our manufactures in Taiwan. In that way we can do the quality checking faster and more efficiently, by being there in person rather than communicating by email and across timezones.
The biggest challenge is shipping and distribution. This is the first time we do this, and this is why we are not delivering to the whole world, but rather focusing on the biggest Kickstarter markets, making sure to be able to deliver in time and within the budget.
However, we will make sure, in the event that things don't go as planned, we will communicate with you honestly and keep you up to date along every step of the way. We are committed to quality and making sure you get the product you deserve.
