An internet-based writer's resource that matches a story to publications with the same fiction fingerprint.

What is a Fiction Fingerprint?

A fiction fingerprint is a statistical analysis of a story's structure, grammar, length, and style. The closer the fingerprints match, the stronger the recommendation to submit to the journal with the matching print.

How Does It Work?

A challenge for writers, particularly fiction writers, is finding the magazine, website, literary journal, or other publisher that would most likely publish their writing. The objective of the Fiction Fingerprinting project is to create an online resource that helps writers. Sort of like a dating service, it will match stories to publications that are the best fit, helping writers quickly decide where to submit their writing.

Writers upload their story to the web site, and the program makes its recommendations. Recommendations will be ranked, and will provide all sorts of useful information, like how closely the publication is a match based on the text analysis, and other factors, such as the publications acceptance rate and how open the publication is to new writers.

What Do You Need the Money For?

If funded, the money will be used to 1) build a database of publications, 2) develop the program and fiction fingerprinting algorithm, and 3) train the algorithm for the most accurate matches. Building the database and training the algorithm will require an extensive effort to acquire enough writing samples and to develop a valid statistical model for fiction fingerprinting.

Other Applications

The result of the project will be an internet-based open source platform. This platform can be applied to other unstructured text analysis applications besides fiction writing. Developers can use the source code to create other applications to predict consumer behavior, manage content and documents, create an alternative to "wisdom of the crowd" recommendation engines, and more.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The key challenge for the project is getting the algorithm right, which requires building a valid model for evaluating the text of fiction stories and the technical implementation of that model.

Kurt Crisman has a writing degree and a keen understanding of the fiction marketplace, as shown by his metablog, www.unpublishedguy.com. He has the expertise to identify publications to include in the database and how the attributes (syntax, grammar, style, etc.) of fiction can be used in a statistical model.

Dorn Williams has the technical background to develop and implement the fiction fingerprinting platform. He will use his skills as an information technology architect and web application project manager to coordinate the development of the platform.
