Do you remember any of the books you asked your parents to read to you over and over again as a little kid? I do - my favorite was Animalia by Graeme Base. That book, along with Reading Rainbow, had a profound effect on me: they inspired a drive to create beautiful, memorable and fun books to share with curious kids.
This Kickstarter campaign is all about sharing my first book with you. I have long been inspired by the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear, who was a poet, artist, naturalist and adventurer. This old poem is silly, adventurous, whimsical and sweet - great fodder for illustration! By using this poem as the foundation of my first kid's book, I get to share this great piece of literature, a love of nature, and entertaining whimsy with fellow adventurers of all ages. And, hopefully, this project will inspire a new generation of readers and artists, while giving all of you parents a new, beautiful book to add to the bedtime repertoire!
I've been illustrating and creating artwork in my free time for decades, and now that I'm the director of a community art center in Indiana, I finally have the time, resources, and motivation to bring my ideas to life. In my role as director, I advocate for local artists every day, making the case that we all have something beautiful to contribute to the world - it's high time that I take my own advice and follow through on this life-long dream!
All I need now is a little bit of help to spread the word about this project and to underwrite some of the printing costs. I am working with an international printing company to create the highest-quality, hard cover, full-color, offset printing job possible. These will be gorgeous books when they are finished, and you can have one of the first copies, hot off the presses!
There are many levels of rewards for this project, including matted prints, a poster, original art, a limited-edition version of the book, and even a special dinner party!
If you happen to be in the area of central Indiana this April, you can drop by Nickel Plate Arts in Noblesville and see all of the original drawings on display in the showcase gallery throughout the month of April. You can also join me for a Kickstarter Party (a chance to celebrate together and to annnounce a Stretch Goal!) at Nickel Plate Arts on Tuesday, April 25th from 7-9 p.m.
So, won't you please join the owl, the pussycat and me on on this illustrated adventure? It's sure to be one you'll never forget!
Risks and challenges
All creative projects risk withering before they come to completion, but I'm happy to say that as this project goes live, all of the artwork is finished!
My editor and I are currently executing the digital work necessary to format each page. With over ten years of experience and dozens of previous digital projects under his belt, my editor is an expert in this process: I know that my artwork is in good hands and well on its way to being a high-quality book. This means that I should be able to send the project to the printer within days of the end of this Kickstarter campaign!
Most likely, this book will be printed overseas to keep the production costs afforrdable. There is, of course, always a risk that overseas shipping will be delayed in some way. I'll be sure to keep all of my backers well informed of the printing process and shipping status.
Barring unforeseen obstacles, I will begin mailing rewards the week the books arrive, which should be 10-12 weeks after I confirm the order with the printer.
The rest should be relatively easy! Aside from the book itself, all of my rewards are secured - my living room is full of prints waiting to find a good home! All in all, the risks to this project's completion and delivery are low - I can't wait to send you your copy!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
